Be it known that il, CHARLES A. CoUcH, of the city and county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Garment-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents the lower part of a corset with one of my said improved hose-supporter fastenings attached thereto; and Figs. 2 and 3 represent, upon an enlarged scale, a perspective view and longitudinal section, respectively, of said garment-fastening.

My invention relates to devices for attaching the upper end of the elastic portion of a hose-supporter to the lower part of the corset, the object thereof being to dispense with the use of safety-pins, of sewing the elastic to the corset, or other means of fastening heretofore employed.

To enable others to better understand the nature and purpose of my said invention, l will now proceed to describe itinere in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference thereon.

In said drawings, A represents the lower part of an ordinary corset, B the usual hosesupporter, and C my improved spring holding device attached thereto. Said hose-supporter comprises, as usual, the elastic band a, commonly made in practice with two branches at the bottom, with a fastening device on the lower end of each for attachment to the upper end of the hose. rlhe same not constituting a part of my invention is not shown.

My improved spring holding' device comprises the body L, the spring-hook c, springears d CZ, the means for fastening the device to the corset, and an eye or loop e, attached to the upper end of the elastic band t and adapted to be fitted over said spring-hook c, as is shown in the drawings.

The means for attaching the device to the corset consists of a central tongue f', designed to lie against the front edge of the corset, and two longitudinal flanges g g, one at each side thereof, adapted to lie against the inner edge of said corset when the device is fitted thereto. Said tongue and flanges curve outward alittle at their bases, where they join body I), and inwardly toward each other in directions at right angles to the body at their outer ends g (1, as is shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of forming clamping-jaws to fasten the device to the corset. To facilitate said holding operation, said tongue and flanges are each provided at various points on their surface with inwardly-prejecting spurs /1 arranged at an angle pointing toward the body of the device, so that in drawing thereupon they will pierce the fabric of the corset and securely hold the device from pulling' ofi". l do not, of course, limit myself to the 4number of' said spurred tongues and flanges in practice.

The spurred tongue and flanges while designed to fasten the device permanently to the corset may be sprung apart, the device pushed back a little to withdraw the spurs, and the device then readily removed from the corset, if desired.

The device, as previously stated, is in practice noadc of tempered steel, so as to hold the fastening tongue and flanges in their proper positions against the corset and to also hold the hook c and ears Z (Z in their proper normal positions and at the same time permit them to be sprung out of said normal positions in fitting the eye or loop c over the hook. In performing said operation the upper end thereof is slipped over the upper end of said hook, then forced down between said hook and the spring-ears Z (Z, the latter yielding' backward to permit the eye or hook to pass down by them and then springing forward into position over the same to hold it from accidentally becoming disengaged from the hook. 'lo facllitate said operation, the eye or loop is preferably made in curved form, concave upon its face, as is shown in Figs. 3 and li, so that it may be more easily applied over the top end of the hook, and also to more securely hold it in position and admit of free lateral swinging movements after having been applied. The bottom of' the eye or loop piece is provided with a transverse slot vf, through which to pass the end of the elastic band and then fasten the same by sewing or otherwise. Said eye or loop is preferably made of sheet metal; but as it is not essential to the carrying out'of my inventionl do not limit myself thereto.

By the construction shown and describeda unique and perfect fastening is provided, adapted to be easily attached to the corset7 and when attached is held securely from being accidentally disengaged. No protruding' parts are formed on the device for clothing to catch upon, and the elastic being suspended by an eye from a hook allows of a free lateral action of the parts to conform with the move- 'ments of the wearer.

. rlhe device is simple in construction, strong, durable, and not likely to get out of order and may be placed upon the market at a mere nominal cost to the manufacturer and user. It dispenses with the present crude method of fastening by means of safety-pins and the inconvenient slow operation of sewing the elastic to the corset so commonly employed, thus saving in time as Well as expense.

Having now described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM

l. A garment-fastening for hose-supporters, comprising in combination a central body, having a tongue and flanges which fit over the inner and outer edges of the corset or other supporting part, said anges being provided with a series Aof inwardly-projecting, sharp spurs, pointing toward said body, said body also being provided at the opposite end from the aforesaid tongue and ianges with a central hook, and with spring-ears at the sides thereof, and an eye or loop part adapted to be sprung down past said spring-ears into the aforesaid hook, said eye or loop part being provided with means whereby the hose-supporter may be attached thereto, substantially as set forth.

2. In a garment-fastening for hose-supporters, the body part I), having the central tongue f and flanges g g, at one end, each provided with a series of inwardly-projecting' sharp spurs pointing toward said body, said tongue being adapted to fit over one side of the edge of the corset and the flanges over the other side of said edge to grip and form a strong hold upon the corset between them, said body also being provided with a central hook at the opposite end from said tongue and Hanges, and spring-ears at each side thereof, all made of one integral piece of sheet metal, substantially as set forth.
