Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed February 8, 1905. Serial No. 244, 741.
To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARVE J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, rcsidingat Zion City, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding squares, and has for its object improvements with respect to the joint between the two arms of the square, together with simple and efiicient means for holding said arms in adjusted position.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction hcreinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the square open. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the square closed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the two arms of the-square are indicated at 6 and 7, respectively, they being pivotally connected by a pin 8. A portion of the outer end of the arm 6 is cut away, as at 9, leaving a tongue 10, against which the inner end of the arm 7 bears when the square is open. Below the part 9 the arm 6 is halved, as at 11, and the arm 7 has an extension 12, which is also halved and fits on the part 11. The pivot-pin 8 extends through the parts 11 and 12. The edge 13 of the tongue 10 is parallel to the outer edge 14 of the arm 6, and as the inner end of the arm 7 abuts against said edge 12 when the square is open both arms are made to extend in true relation to each other.
The arm 6 is recessed, as at 15, and at one end one of the walls of the recess tapers, as at 16. The rear end of the extension 12 is shaped to correspond to the outline of the recess at this end, being beveled, as at 17, which part registers with the tapering portion 16 of the recess when the square is open. The recess forms a seat for a key 18, which is also tapered, as at 19, to correspond to the parts 16 and 17, and is arranged to be slid behind the extension 12. The key being wedge-shaped, it can be tightly jammed against the extension, thereby securely holding the arm 7 in adjusted position. The key is retained in the recess by being dovetailed thereinto, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Upon sliding the key from behind the extension the square can be folded, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding square comprising one arm having a lateral extension, and another arm pivoted to said lateral extension and having a tongue projecting endwise and arranged to stop against the other arm, and a locking-key engageable between the arms.
2. A folding square comprising one arm having a lateral extension, the inner edge of which is beveled, and another arm pivoted to said extension and having a slot, and a locking-key working in the slot and engaging the beveled edge of the extension.
In testimony whereof]. have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARVE JOHNSON. Witnesses:
