Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J USTIN E. PAGE, residing at Kansas City, and ABRAHAM L. HARTLEY, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement inbaling-presses wherein power usually lost by friction is saved, the application of power largely equalized to suit the work required, and a more positive application of power to all points is obtained in a baling-press that will run equally as well in either direction.
It consists in the construction hereinafter pointed out.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the device; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a detail view looking at the bottom of the master-wheel; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a detail view of a cross-head; Figs. 6 and 7, perspective and side detail views of the weight and spring, Figs. 8 and 9, end and top views of the feed.
In the drawings, the letter A represents the base of the press, having at one end a the motor B and at the other end a the press-trunk O, having the hopper c. In the present instance the motor is shown to be an engine, though any form' of motive power may be used. Y
The engine D is supported in a frame d over the end a of the base A, the ends cl of the frame (1 being supported upon studs (1 which are the ournals of antifriction-rollers d there being preferably four to balance the device. These rollers d have grooved peripheries (1 in which bears the rim e of the master-wheel E. This wheel is a crownwheel having the teeth 6, with which intermesh the pinion d of the engine D. This master-wheel E is provided on the under side with the two diametric grooves or channels 6 e crossing each other at a right angle. These grooves or channels are made with a main portion e and openings e the former being wider than the latter. In these channels e e are placed the cross-heads F and F, one in each channel, the two cross-heads being made alike. The cross-head consists of a a main portion f and a tongue f, the former being wider than the latter. At each end of the cross-head is journaled transversely a wheel f 2 f and in the sides of the cross-head are placed a number of antifriction-balls f the peripheries of the wheels and the balls projecting beyond the edges of the crosshead. One cross-head is placed in each channel, the main portions of the cross-head engaging the main portions of the channels, the peripheries of the wheels and balls bearing against the edges of the channels and the tongues of the cross-heads protruding through the openings of the channels. head F end h of the plunger-beam H is held by pivot-pin h, and the plunger-beam is pivoted to the other cross-head F at the proper distance from its pivotal connection with the cross-head F. This plunger-beam H carries at its other end 7L2 the plunger K,
which is located in the trunk O. This plunger has the two grooves or recesses 7c 1c, having the curved backs k k and opening out into the trunk in front the full depth' of the plunger, as at k W, and having the slots k k at the rear at the bottom. Across each groove or recess are journaled at the top and midway the rollers 75 k Passing through the slots k k and into the recesses 7c 7c between each set of rollers 76 k are two curved compressor-jaws L L, having the outer toothed ends Z Z. These jaws are pivoted to a cross-bar Z, which is secured to a sliding-rod M, passing through a loop m and an abutment m. On the end m of the rod M on the side of the abutment m away from the jaws L L is placed a spring m which bears against the abutment m and a bearing m on the rod M.
Between the motor B and the trunk O there is journaled beneath the plunger-beam H a crank-shaft N. Around the horizontal arm n of this shaft is a spring O, having one end 0 secured to the shaft and the other end 0 secured to the base of the ball ng-press. The vertical arm n of the crank-shaft N has a weight P at the end n thereof and is pivoted to the end Q of a link Q, the other end q of the link being pivoted to the plunger-beam H.
Hay is thrown into the trunk O through the hopper c. As the master-wheel E is turned by the motor the cross-heads F F slide in the channels .2 6 causing the plungerbeam H to be reciprocated. As the plungerbeam moves toward the trunk O the plunger To one crossis pressed against the loose hay, forcing it along the trunk C in the usual way, the proper separating blocks or heads being used. As the plunger K moves inward it causes the compressor-jaws L L to descend, the teeth Z Z of the latter catching the hay and forcing it down and along the trunk C. As this action takes place the spring m is compressed B6 tween the abutment m and bearing m As the plunger K is forced into the trunk by the plunger-beam H the weight P is thrown into the position shown in Fig. 7, and the spring N, previously at tension, unwinds. Both the weight and spring thus aid in throwing or urging forward the plunger at the beginning of its inward stroke, adding .an initial efiiclency to the power of the engine. After the plunger K has reached the extremity of its inward stroke the continued rotation of the master-wheel E causes the cross-heads to return the plunger-beam H, thus withdrawing the plunger K for another stroke. As this return of the lunger-beam H occurs the sprmg m with raws the com ressor-jaws for another stroke, and the weig t P and spring 0 are returned to their operative position for another str'oke.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1; The combination with a baling-press having a plunger; a motor for operating the plunger, and weight between the motor and plunger, such weight operating with the motor in forcing the plunger forward.
2. The combination of the master-wheel E, the friction-rollers, d transverse grooves 6 (3 the cross-heads F and F having jour naled thereon the wheels f f and the antifriction-balls, f the plunger-beam H, the press-trunk, C, the plunger K attached to said itman.
3. The combination of the press-trunk, the plunger and the compressor-jaws located in such plunger.
4. The combination of the plunger having the recesses, the compressor-jaws located in such recesses, and having the spring connected to such jaws.
5. The combination of the plunger K, having the recesses 7c k; the friction-rollers k and 7c, the compressor-jaws L, L, having the teeth Z Z, and located in said recesses,-the rod M, connected to such jaws, the abutment, m, the bearings, m and the spring m 6. The combination of the plunger, K, having the recesses, 7c 7c; the compressor-jaws, L L, having the teeth, Z Z, and located in such recesses, the rod, M, connected to such aws, the abutment, m, the bearing, m and the spring, m all arranged as set forth.
