Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed December 19, 1904. Serial No. 237,481.
1'0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. WET- ZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box- Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which igure 1 is a perspective view of a displaybox having a cover constructed in accordance with my invention. tional view through the cover. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational view of a fragment of the cover, partly in section, to indicate speciic details; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the hinge.
This invention relates to display-boxes adapted to contain certain articles so that they will be visible but not accessible unless the cover is swung on its hinges provided therefor.
The invention is particularly designed for displaying cakes, crackers, &c., and as it is contemplated to employ a transparent panel, such as glass, in the top or side of the box through which the articles may be displayed it is found to be an advantage to protect the adjacent edges of the panel-sections so as to prevent their becoming chipped or broken, and it is also desirable that an inexpensive and eflicient form of spring-hinge be provided, so that when the box is utilized to display from its side the hinge-cover will be returned to its proper position as soon as released by the person removing the goods from the box.
It is the object of this invention to overcome the objections heretofore encountered in display-boxes of this character, and, further, to provide means whereby the parts may be easily and quicklyl assembled.
The box or receptacle 1 may be of any desired shape, although the most convenient form is rectangular. One side of the box is provided with a transparent sectional panel surrounded by a sectional frame, so that one panel-section will be rigidly fastened to thev box, while the other section is adapted to swing. The rigid panel-section 2 is held in the rigid frame-section 3, which section is fastened to the box by suitable means, such as screws 4.
5 and 5a constitute hinge-leaves carried by Fig. 2 is a secthe ends of the rigid frame-section 3, which leaves have offsets or shoulders 6, in which are openings aliningvwith similar openings in the hinge-leaves 7 and 7a on the swinging section comprising the frame 8, in which is the movable panel-section 9.
10 designates a longitudinallyarranged tube having a longitudinal slot 10a therein to receive the edge of one of the panels, preferably the lower panel 2. This slotted tube 10 protects both edges of the panel-sections 2 and 9, the ends of the tube receiving short rods or stub-shafts l1 having reduced portions constituting pintles for the hinges, as at 12.
The frame sections 3 and 8 are spaced apart, and their adjacent portions are chamfered or beveled, as at 13 and 14, respectively. This is for the purpose of permitting the movable cover-section to swing back from the box on the hinge-pintle portions 12 of the rod 11. In order that the upper cover-section will be returned to its position as shown in Fig. 1, I have provided a spring which consists of a coil 15, the convolutes of whichsurround the pintle end of the tube, one end of the spring terminating in a laterally-disposed finger 16, resting in a groove 17 in the framesection 3, which is provided Jfor holding the glass panel 2. This finger 16 is interposed between the frame and the edge of the glass, so that it is prevented from becoming displaced. The opposite end of the spring is embedded in the end of the frame-section 8, the end of said spring constituting a finger 18, held against displacement by the hingeleaves 7 or 7a, dependingupon the side on which the spring is.
19 designates a knob by means of which the swinging cover-section can be swung back from the box, and it will be obvious that as soon as this knob is released the section will immediately assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
By reference to Fig. 4 it will be noticed that each pintle is provided with a shoulder 19, abutting against one of the hinge inembers, and a head 20, between which and the shoulder the hinge members are secured.
By utilizing the construction of cover similar to the one herein described the goods may be conveniently displayed, and while they will be readily accessible they will be protected against deterioration on account of contact with dust, dirt, and other foreign substances.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A boX-cover comprising hinged frame-sec-- tions having grooves 1n their inner edges7 a transp arent panel member held in the grooves of the respective sections, a longitudinallyarranged tube fitting over the edge of one of the transparent panel members, hinge-plates on the ends of the frame-sections and having alining openings alining with the ends of theI tube, pintles in the ends ofthe tube and passing through the alining openings in the hingeplates, and coil-springs surrounding the tube and having oppositely-disposed ends, one end itting in one of the grooves in one frame-section and interposed between the edge of the transparent panel and the adjacent wall of the groove, and the other end of the spring being held betweena portion of the hinge and one end oi the opposite frame-section; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 16th day of December, 1904.
FREDERICK L. WETZEL.
