Description

PATENTED AUG. l5 1905.
A. GRIBVES. PITMAN CONNECTION.
APPLICATION I'ILED P113. 18. 1906.
mam am UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT GRIEV ES, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
P|T|v|AN CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug- 15, 1905.
Application filed February 18,1905. Serial No. 246,357.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GRIEvEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Im provementsin Pitman Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part the longitudinal axis of the connection between I the pitman and said driven member and also a hinge movement about the axis of said connection, the object of the invention being to improve the connecting-joint between the two parts by providing means for automatically preventing any loosening of the parts due to wear in usage, and also to provide means whereby the two parts may be readily connected or disconnected without the use of tools.
I secure the above objects by the mechanism shown by the drawings and described in the specification accompanying this application, in Which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 2, a rear side elevation of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a cross-section on line A B of Fig. 1, like numerals representing like parts throughout the various figures.
4 represents a form of knife-head attachment for the cutting apparatus of mowingmachines provided with the usual side wings 5 and 6 and the tang portion 7 to receive the knife-back in a well-known way. The head 4 is provided with a cup-shaped bearing 8, and 9 is a concavo-convex member integral with the pitman 10 and adapted to be received by the member 8. A latch-piece 11 has one end pivoted to the pitman 10, and its opposite end is provided with a concave bearing portion 12, adapted to fit upon the rear outside surface of the bearing 8. The portion 12 is provided with a slot 13, concentric with the pivotal connection of the parts 10 and 11. An opening 1 1 is formed in the rear wall of the member 9, adapted to receive a bolt 15, the head of which bears against the outer surface of the part 12 of the latch-piece 11, as shown in Fig. 2. The bolt is provided with a nut 16, and a coiled spring 17 surrounds it between the nut and the inner concave wall of the bearing-piece 9 and operates to yieldingly hold the parts in contact. An opening 18 is provided in the wall of the part 8 that is large enough to allow the head of the bolt 15 to pass through it for the purpose of disengaging the parts when the latch 11 is swung about its pivot, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The device operates as follows: The part 9 I is free to move-to a limited extent in the concave bearing 8 about an imaginary axis transverse to the longitudinal pivotal axis of the connecting-bolt and is also movable about said pivotal connection as an axis. The bolt,
in combination with the spring, yieldingly holds the parts in contact, and any wear of the contacting parts is automatically compensated for by such means. To disconnect the parts, the bolt is pressed longitudinally in the direction of its head portion against the action of the spring suflicient to allow the latch-piece to be moved about its pivot and carry its cup portion away from the part 8, when the head of the bolt will pass through the opening 18, thereby effecting the disengagement of the parts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pitman connection, the combination of a two-part joint, a spring-pressed bolt opv erative to hold its members yieldingly in contact, and an intervening slotted latch-piece adapted, when moved laterally relative to the longitudinal axis of the bolt, to release said bolt from one of said parts.
2. In a pitman connection, the combination of a two-part joint, a spring-pressed bolt operative to hold its members yieldingly in contact, and an intervening latch-piece pivotally connected with one of the parts and having a slot concentric with said pivotal connection and embracing the body of the bolt, said latch-piece being adapted to release said bolt from one of said parts when moved about its pivotal connection.
3. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex parts, a spring-pressed bolt operative to yieldingly hold said parts in contact, and an intervening concave slotted latch-piece embracing the body of the bolt and adapted, when moved laterally relative to the longitudinal axis of said bolt, to release said bolt from one of said parts.
4. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex members, a springpressed bolt operative to yieldingly hold said members in contact, and an intervening pivoted latch-piece, said latch-piece being adapted to release said bolt from one of said members when moved about its pivotal connection.
5. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex members, a springpressed bolt operative to yieldingly hold said members in contact, and an intervening pivoted latch piece embracing said bolt, said latch-piece being adapted to release said bolt from one of said members when moved about its pivotal connection.
6. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex members, a springpressed bolt operative to yieldingly hold said members in contact, and an intervening pivoted latch-piece, said latch-piece having a slot concentric with its pivot embracing said bolt and adapted to release it from one of said members when moved about its pivotal connection.
7 In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex parts, a spring-pressed bolt operative to yieldingly hold said parts in contact, and an intervening concave slotted latch-piece embracing the body of the bolt and pivoted to one of said parts, said latchpiece being adapted to release said bolt from one of said parts when moved about its pivotal connection.
8. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex parts, one of said parts forming part of the pitman and the other a part of the connected member, a spiral spring seated within the concave side of one part, and a concave slotted latch-piece adapted to fit upon the convex side of the other part, a bolt passing within the coiled spring and through central openings in each of said parts, and having an adjusting-nut bearing against the spring and a head upon its opposite end hearing against the concave latch-piece, the said head being adapted to pass through the opening in the adjacent part when the latch-piece is removed.
9. In a pitman connection, the combination of two concavo-convex parts, one of said parts being integral with the pit-man and the other forming a part of the connected member, a spiral spring seated within the concave side of one of said parts, a concave latch-piece adapted to fit upon the convex side of the other part, and pivoted upon one of said parts and having a slot concentric With said pivot, a bolt passing within the coiled spring and through central openings in each of said parts, and having an adjusting-nut bearing against the spring and a head upon its opposite end bearing against the concave latch-piece, the said head being adapted to pass through the opening in the adjacent part when the concave latch-piece is removed.
In Witness whereof I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AL BERT GRIEVES.
