IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATOB.
' v @it Schmal: numb .ta in ties: rtiers @anni ani making am af -lig: same.
To ALL wHoM Ir 'MAY coNcEnN: y t l Be it known that I, HERMAN SPIuO, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox, and State of Tennessee', have invented a new and useful Improvement'. in Brick and Mortar-Elevators.; and I do hereby dechire 'that the folloning'is a full, clear, and exact description t usethe same, reference being hsd'to the accompanying drawings, forming part -of this specication, in ulrich- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my invention, the section being taken through the line a: a: of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same. l Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. The object of this inventionis to accomplish the raising. of, brick and mortar for btiildingppurposes, and to le to rthe builders upon the scaffolding.
It consists of the mechanism set forth in the following. In the accompanying drawings, B B arcupright srisingfrom the baset`rame G E H. D is a cross-piece, ng an o ctagonal forn1 ,'or other equivalent means, for 'preventing the 'endl'esshelt ci' buckets from slipping thereon. I
'lhe'belt is composed of short boards, g g g, aixed to hinge-plates,fff, ic., the said plates being connected by pintle-rods, h h h, 85e., passing through the eyes of the said plates. These rods are capable of being witbsto be lengthened, as the build drawn laterally, for the purpose of interpolating other boards, when the belt 'i ing rises. A
The nprights B are formed of twoor more beams of i'rood, having their ends cut to form a scarf orlapped joint, as shown at Q, irhereby the uprighl't's may be lengthened to correspond with the increased height of the building, as its erection progresses. I I l The boxes I are aixed to the boards of the belt at suitable interv the bricks to be elevated.
Thdmortar is borne up in triangular boxes J, which are hooked on to hooks a l: aliixed to the belt-boards.
Each pair 'of hooks, a and b,'are turned reversely from each other, as shown, the hooks b being for carrying up the mortar-boxes, and the hooks a for bringing them donn; the boxes being takenfrom the hooks b by an attendanton the scali`oldand emptied into a box upon the scaffold, and hooked on to the hooks a, to be sent down for reiilling. They nre again removed hy an attendant .at the basent" the machine and filled, and hung upon the hooks b'as thelatter are turned upward to ascend.
The briclbhoxesare only large enough to contain one brckkand are {illed by au attendant as they pass under the lower .drum and commence to ascend. As these boxes become inverted in passing 'over the upper the brick falls ont, and is caught by an attendant standing un the scalol engages with a pinion, l, the shaft olf nhichbears a handals, and are for the purposeof containing drum,
A cog-wheel, m, on the shaft k oi' thc loner drum,
cranlt', R, by means oi' which the machine is operated.
The shal'tj of the u'pper drum has its bearings in the links d d loosely. The uprghts and the cross-part of the said links rest on the shoulders P, nhich latter may be cut in thc uprights or formed of a plate of metal, as shown, and :ailixed to the uprights. These shoulders thus sustain thencigh't of the upper drum, and the belt of boxes and their contents.
The uprights are originally made of sniiieient height for buildings of ordinary or medium height, and es the worlt progresses, additionalboards and bucketsare interpolated in the belt, and theupper dru'm raised correspondingly by ropes or cords K, which pass over the pulleys L L, suspended vfrom a cross-bar or rod, M, which latter is attached to the uprights by loose links N, the latter being sustained by the bolts O O, r other equivalent devices. l Y
The ropes K K terminate in hooks e, which are sot into the eyes, forming part of -the links d d, as shown. h, S, which operation raises the upper drum and straightens the The ropes are then moved in' a windlsss'or wine lengthened belt. it are rollers, ou the-shaftj, for preventing the linlts from cramping against the uprights.
hereof, which will enable others skilled in theni-tV to make and.
