MINERS LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 253,504.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM J. BUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravine, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mining-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in miners lamps, comprehending specifically a top therefor of peculiarconstruction whereby air is admitted to the body of the lamp, while the oil therein is prevented from escaping.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on a line transverse to the section of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the lamp proper comprises a body 1 of usual shape, having a wick-tube 2 and the usual supporting-hook 3. My invention relates particularly to a cap 4:, designed to close the upper end of the lampbody. This cap comprises a plate member 5, hinged at 6 to the body and having a depending flange portion 7 of a size to rest snugly within the upper end of the lamp-body. The flange 7 is of cupformation, depending from the plate 5, so that the bottom plate 8 of said flange member is spaced ashort distance from the plate member 5 to provide a chamber 9.
- The chamber 9 communicates with the interior of the lamp-body by an aperture 10, formed in the plate 8, preferably located adjacent the edge of this plate. The construction described provides a chambered cap member for the lamp-body, having a projecting rim to rest upon the upper end of the cap-body, with the walls of said cap contacting with the interior wall of the lamp-body.
A tube 11, having a closed top 12, is inserted in the cap, the open lower endof the tube being in contact with the plate 8 of the flange member 7. The tube is preferably secured centrally in an opening formed in the plate 5, the closed top of the tube being perforated at 13. The edge of the tube-wall in contact with the plate 8 is circumferentially notched, as at 1 1, to provide for the escape of air from the tub into the chamber 9.
The operation of the construction will be readily apparent from the above description, it being understoodthat airis admitted through the opening 13, through the body of the tube, through the notches 14:, into the chamber 9, and from said chamber through the aperture 10 in said body. It is also obvious that the oil from the lamp-body will not under ordinary circumstances be able to escape through the aperture 13.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A miners lamp comprising a lamp-body, a chambered cap frictionally engaging the lamp-body, a tube fitting within said cap and resting on the lower wall thereof, the lower end of the tube being in communication with the chamber in the cap, the upper wall of the tube being formed with acentral opening, and the lower wall of the cap being formed with an opening beyond the plane of the tube.
2. A cap for miners lamps comprising a plate, a cup-shaped body depending therefrom to provide a chamber in the cap, atube closed at the upper end and secured centrally of the plate with its lower endin contact with the bottom of the chamber, the upper end of said tube being formed with an inlet, the lower end of the tube being notched to establish communication between the tube and the cap-chamber, and a bottom to the cup-shaped body being formed with an aperture beyond the plane of the tube.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
