TROUSERS-PRESSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed August 10, 1904.. Serial No. 220,270.
To U11/)l2 whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HUBBARD A. TENENT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trousers-Pressers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to trousers-pressers in which the garment is subjected to pressure between the adjacent surfaces of platens; and the object of the invention is to provide adevice in which the pressure may be increased or diminished according to the needs and greater pressure delivered upon that portion of the garment requiring it and which shall be simple and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper face of the device. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the lower face. Fig. 3 is an edge view or front elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4 in FigsQl and 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 in the sanne figures. Fig..6 is a vertical section corresponding to a portion of Fig. 5, showing a detail on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same partsv in all the figures.
A Al are two platens or boards, preferably of wood, trapezoidal in shape, the ends being at right angles to the straight back edges and the front edges straight, but at an angle relatively to the back so that oneend is wider than the other to conform to the general outlines of a ,pair of trousers arranged for pressing. The lowermost board A has a strap B, of metal, extending transversely across the lower face near each end, sunk to lie flush with the surface and secured to the board by screws or otherwise. The rear end of each strap is bifurcated and curled upon itself to inclose and hold a pin O, forming the center of a hinge-joint for a hinge bolt or screw O', the head C2 of which is traversed by the pin C. The upper board A has a similar strap B', similarly located near each end, the rear ends B2 extending beyond the rear edge of the board and each having an opening through which the hinge-bolt O' passes, each supplied with a check-nut D beneath the end of the strap serving to limit the distance to which the rear edges of the boards may approach each other, and a thumb-nut D above the strap by which pressure tending' to cause such approach may be applied. On the upper end of each hinge-bolt is a knob D2, serving as an ornament and also as a protection against contact with the sharp edges of the screw in handling the device.
The front edges of the boards are drawn together by thumb-bolts E E, each having a I head E', corresponding to the thumb-nuts D. The bolts E E extend through holes in the widened portions B3 of the upper straps B and are engaged in screw-threaded plates or nuts F F, set in the upper face of the lower board. The latter and the lower straps B B are bored at to permit the smoothly-rounded lower ends of the thumb-bolts to pass through if required in the act of drawing together the front edges of the boards.
The inner or adjacent faces of the boards l are each covered by a cushion M, fastened thereto, which may be understood to be any suitable filling, over which is stretched a covering of fabricV or other material. At the wider ends of the boards the cushions are thicker or deeper than at the remaining portions, as indicated at M', and openings m are provided, through which the thumb-bolts E E may extend freely.
By unscrewing the thumb-bolts the upper board may be raisedvand turned back upon the hinges C C. The trousers to be pressed are smoothly arranged upon the lower cushion, the legs lying upon each other and the body or waist portion, likely to be more wrinkled or distorted by wear, occupying the deeper part of the cushion. The upper board is again lowered, the part M of its cushion lying upon the body portion of the trousers and the thumbbolts engaged. The desired pressure upon the garment is attained by screwing down the thumb-bolts and thumb-nuts, the yielding of the cushions tending to distribute the pressure and the body portion of the trousers receiving a proportionally greater pressure by reason of the increased depth of the cushions over that area. The trousers may be thus inclosed and pressed as long as may be found necessary or until again required for service.
The straps B B serve to stiifen the boards and resist strains tending to check or crack them longitudinally. The check-nuts D D serve to limit the approach of the rear edges and when once properly set to produce the required pressure for a garment of given thickness need not be again disturbed unless garments differing greatly in thickness are to be treated. l
The nuts or screw-threaded plates F F are secured to the lower board by screws or otherwise and the upper portions of their threaded holes are countersunk, as shown, to facilitate the engagement of the bolts E E.
Modifications may be made in the forms and proportions within wide limits. The thickened areas M of the cushions may be greater i or less in extent than shown and differently "located, or the cushions may be of uniform thickness throughout and of any depth determined by practice to be desirable.
Although I have described the device as especially designed for pressing trousers, it will be understood that with or without changes of vform it Imay be adapted to serve successfully in operating upon other garments.
I claiml.y In a device of the character set forth, two platens arranged one above the other, hingebolts connecting the rear edges of such platens, means as thumb-nuts on said bolts for drawing such rear edges together, means as thumb bolts and nuts for drawing together the front edges of said platens, a cushion on the inner face of each platen, said cushions being thickened at portions of said faces, as and for the purpose described.
2. A lower platen A and an upper platen A', straps B extending transversely on the lower face of said lower platen, bolts C hinged to the rear ends of said straps, straps B eX- tending transversely on the upper face of said upper platen and receiving the free ends of said bolts, a check-nut on each of said bolts below said straps B', and a thumb-nut on each of said bolts above said straps B, screwthreaded plates F F at the front edge of said lower platen A, thumb-bolts E E extending through said straps B and upper platen into said plates, and cushions M M on the adjacent faces of said platens, having thickenedportions M M, all combined and arranged to serve substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
