l A Be -it known that' I, JAMES M. EVARTS, of New Haven, inthe county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented n new and useful Igcprovement in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare-that the following is a. full, clear, and exact descriptionk thereof, which will -enableothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawingsforniing part of this specification.

i The nature of my invention relates to improvements in adjustable pipe-tongs, the object of which is to provide a. more sim'ple and reliable article than those now in use.

.Itlconsists in providing a long slot in one of the jaws, where the joint is to be formed with the other jaw, for sliding the pivot, -which is fixed to the other jaw, back and forth, which slot, for about half the distance throughV the jaw, is'perpendicular to the face ofthe jaw, and for theothermhalf, inclined thereto in each direction,` so as to presenta section of a V-form, or the section of a triangle, of which the kbase is the longest side. The `faces of these said inclined walls of the slot are serrated, and a stud, fitted to the axial pin, and provided with corresponding angular serrated sides, and also with a rectangular portion, to tit into the rectangular portion ofthe slot, is interposed in the said slot between tle jaws, and constitutes the meansof securing the jaws.

A represents the long jaw, provided with the usual hooked nose, and` with an elongated slot, B, the walls "of which are bevelled on the side to which the short arm C is secured, and serrated o n the bevelled portions, as

shown in fig; 1. D represents a nut or washer, which is provided with bevelled and serrated sides, to correspond with the sides of the slot, and with a central hole, through which the axial bolt E passes. F represents a thumb-nut, by which the two jaws are held together, and when it is screwed np the face ofthe jaw C presses it intothe'slot, so that'the projectionspi its serrated faces .mesh 'into the grooves of the serrations in the bevelled walls 'of thlesother jaw, whereby the axialpivot is firmly secured at any point. By loosening the thum`b-nut, the 4nntI) may be disconnected from the serrated faces of the slot in the shank A, and moved, as desired, one way or another'. l

I am'awnro that theface of one jaw has been heretofore serrated, and ailat serrated washer interposed between the lwo jaws;v but that arrangement necessitates a. greater length ofthe axial bolt, which is objectionable, and the jaws cannot be brought so close together,A whereas, in my improved arrangement, the sides ofthe jaws'arc brought into contact, and the axial bolt is stronger, in-oonsequence of being shorter. v

I am aware of the patent granted to James R. Brown, dated 2d Augnst,1859, for pipftongs, but as hi invention diiersfrommine, I do not wish to claim it; but

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The jaw A, provided with the elongated slot B, having tapered and serrated Walls, in combination with the nut D, provided with corresponding inclined and serrated faces, the jaw C, nut F, andthe axialpin'E, substan-A tially as and for the purpose described.
