.useful improvements in that class of antifriction-bearings in which the bearing-rollers are arranged in annular groups and maintained in their annular formation by retaining-rings so arranged as to lprevent their longitudinal displacement under all conditions of motion and load; and the object of lthe invention is to -employ two or more annular groups of bearing-rollers, with a corresponding number of retaining-rings, and to so arrange such groupsV that the axes of the bearing-rollers of one group will be intermediate those of the other group or groups, s o that a continuous bearing-surface will be presented to the other bear- 'ing elements for the purposes, first', of relieving the bearing-rollers of the torsional strains caused by the impact ofthe load tangentially against them during the revolution of the bearing elements; second,1 by relieving them of such tangential strains to minimize the frictiongenerated by the contact of the hearing-rollers with the other bearing elements. In carrying out this object it is necessary to employ at least two groups of bearing-rollers; but as many more than two groups of bearing-rollers may be employed as the size of the bearing demands. The bearing-rollers of each group are journaleda between retaining-rings which maintain them in their annular formation and prevent their longitudinal displacement, the rollers of one group being so arranged that their longitudinal axes will be intermediate the longitudinal vaxes of the adjoining group or groups, so that their bearing-surfaces will be opposedvto the intervals between the bearing-surfaces of the others,
the retaining-rings for each group of rollers being so spaced that the rollers may creep longitudinally for a limited distance between -them under the iniuence of their load, the
impact of the end thrust of the rollers being received and absorbed by the retaining-rings, which are rigidly braced by the tie rods or bolts holding them together in cylindrical alinement, and the frictional contact of the rollerswith the retaining-rings being minimized by the convexed ends with which the bearing-rollers are formed.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the bearing- -rollers, retaining-rings, and tie rods or bolts.
Fig. la is a similar view of a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view` takenl on the line a a, Fig. l, which passes through two. of
the bearing-spindles and the bearing elements with which the bearing-rollers contact; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 3, taken on the line b, Fig. l. l
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
For the-purpose of illustrating and explaining the purpose and principle of the present invention the antifriction-bearing is shown to consistvof threeV annular groups of bearing- .,rollers, (lettered, respectively, an, b, and 0,)
maintained in their annular formation by four retaining-rings 0l, e, fand g, the retainingrings d and g being placed at the outer endsl of the bearing-rollers of the groups a and c and the retaining-rings e and f being placed betweenv the inner ends of the bearing-rollers of the groups a and c and the adjacent ends ofthe bearing-rollers of the group b, so that they will prevent the longitudinal displacement of the bearing-rollers in addition to maintaining the annular formation of. the groups,` and fastening the retaining-rings together in cylindrical alignement are tie bolts or rods t'. The tie bolts or rods h have shoulders't to engage the inner faces of the re-v bearing-rollers binding during their revolution the distance between the retaining-rings is slightly greater than the length of the bearing-rollers, so that the bearing-rollers may have a limited longitudinal movement between them in which they can creep in either direction under the iniiuence of the load upon the bearing parts.
Owing tothe presence of the tie bolts or rods la, it is necessary to longitudinally bore the bearing-rollers j of each group, so that the tie rods or bolts may pass longitudinally through them, the diameters of the bores (not shown) of such bearing-rollers being suiciently greater than the diameters of the tie rods or bolts to avoid contact with them. rlhe bearing-rollers Z of each group have similar bores r and are mounted on bearing-spindles m, similar to the tie-rods, this construction being shown in Fig. l, or the bearingrollers Z of each group, as shown in Fig. 4, may be provided with gudgeons o, mounted in bearings p in the retaining-rings.
As shown in the drawings, the longitudinal axes of the bearing-rollers of the group ct aline with those of the group c and the longitudinal axes of the bearing-rollers of the group b are located intermediate those of the groups a and c, so that the bearing-surfaces of the bearing-rollers of the group I) will be opposed to the intervals between the bearingsurfaces of the bearing-rollers of the groups a and c to present a continuous bearing-surface to the bearing elements q and r, with which the bearing-rollers are in contact, and to relieve the bearing-rollers of the tangential strains to which they would otherwise be subjected, as the intervals between the bearing-rollers have heretofore presented an opportunity for the bearing elements q and r transmitting to the bearing-rollers the torsional strains o the loads. By presenting a continuous bearing-surface to the bearing elements the frictional contact of the bearingrollers With these parts is not only minimized, but the wearing qualities of the parts are greatly increased without a corresponding increase in the cost of the construction.
Although three annular groups of bearings have been shown and described, it is not desired to confine the invention to this number, as two groups of bearing-rollers can be used for a smaller bearing or proportionately more for a larger one.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An antifriction-bearing comprising two or more annular groups of longitudinally-bored bearing-rollers, the bearing-rollers of one group being opposed to the intervals between the bearing-rollers of the adjacent group or groups, retaining-rings interposed between the adjacent grou ps of bearing-rollers to maintain them in their annular formation, tie-rods for holding the retaining-rings in cylindrical alinement passing through the longitudinal bores of the bearing-rollers in their path and between the rims of the bearing-rollers of the adjacent group or groups and shoulders for the tie-rods to engage the retaining-rings for each group of bearing-rollers and hold them properly spaced.
