The object of the invention is without increasing the cost of producing such couplings or rendering them intricate of construction,
and thus diflicult of assemblage, to cause the connection or union of the couplings to be more positive in character and practically free from possibility of becoming accidentally disconiected from any cause when once assem- With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of .parts of a stovepipe-coupling, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing two sections of stovepipe that combine to produce one form of coupling. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional detail view through the coupling formed by the sections shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the two sections of stovepipe that combine to produce a slightly-modified form of coupling. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail view through the coupling formed by the sections shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a part of a section of Stovepipe, and 2 practically a complete section thereof. Each section is crimped at one end, as at 3, to adapt it to fit within the end of the adjacent section,
and the crimped portion is provided with a plurality of lugs iin this instance four that are rhomboidal in shape. The lugs are adapted to interlock with sockets 5 on an adjacent section of pipe, the sockets as well as the lugs being formed by stamping outward the metal of the pipe-sections, as shown in Fig. 2.
As exhibited in Fig. 1, the sockets are L- shaped, and their longer members 6 and shorter members 7 are disposedobliquely with respect to the axis of the section. As above stated,
the lugs are approximately rhomboidal in form, and their sides are obliquely disposed with respect to the axis of the pipe-section to cause them to engage with the walls of the shorter socket member 7 and exert a drawing action when the pipe-sections are assembled and turned, thereby to force the bead or collar 8, arranged at the base of the crimped portion, against the end of an adjacent pipe-section and form thereby a close joint. By the oblique disposition of the two members of the sockets a twisting action will be necessary, first, to insert the lugs within the socket members 5 and then seat them within the socket members 7, and by this manner of assembling the parts it will be seen that even should the lugs work out of the socket members 7 owing to the oblique disposition of the socket members 5 there will be such resistance to further movement, as to cause the pipe-sections to resist any tendency to accidental separation. The drawing feature referred to is one of importance, inasmuch as a closer and more stable tion that although the improvements of the present invention are simplein character that they will in a thoroughly efficient and prac- -tical manner secure the results desired and, further, that their addition to the pipe-sections will add no objectionable cost to their manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A Stovepipe-section provided with approximately L-shaped locking-sockets, the
