FLANGING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,180, dated July 18, 1905. Application filed December 2, 1904. Serial No. 235,219.

Be it known that I, JOHN H. VANDERSLICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ooatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Flanging-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to accurately flange dished plates and to remove the buckle in the flange in a rapid and effective manner, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation and partly in section of a flanging-machine to which my invention has been applied. Fig. Q'is a view similar to Fig. '1, showing the plate completely flanged. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of a portion of the flanging-head quadrant and carrier. Fig. 4: is a front view of the carrier. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a view of the anvil-roller and its slide. Figs. 7 and 8 are diagram views showing the two positions of the rolls. Figs. 9 and 10 are views illustrating a modification of my invention, and Figs. 11 and 12 are views illustrating a still further modification.
A is the bed-plate of a flanging-machine on which is mounted the flanging-head B, which head can be moved longitudinally on said bed by any suitable operating means. Adjustable on the head is a quadrant b, in which travels a segmental slide B, carrying the flanging-rollers g g. The slide B has a rack at the rear with which meshes a worm-wheel c on a vertical shaft O, driven by a shaft O, so that on turning the shaft O the segmental slide can be turned to flange the plate.
D is a central shaft stepped in a suitable bearing A and driven by gearing d d from a driving-shaft D. Carried by this vertical shaft 1) is a former D upon which the plate to be flanged is clamped. This former is shown in the present instance as having a rounded upper surface, and E is a clamp which is shaped to conform with said former, so as to secure a dished plate a thereto, as shown in Fig. 1.
F is a slide adjustably secured to the bedplate A, so that it can be moved toward or from the shaft D. Carried by the slide is a pin f, on which is mounted a beveled anvilroller f, over which the flange is formed.
The pin is set at an angle, as shown in Fig.
5, so as to bring the edge of the roller as near the overhanging edge of the former as possible and yet allow clearance between the main portion of the roller and the under side of the former. The face of the roller is preferabl y parallel with a line through the center of. the anvil and clamp.
On the segmental slide B is a carrier G, whichcan be adjusted transversely. On this carrier is mounted the two rolls 9 g. In the present instance the carrier slides in ways 6 and has a screw-threaded lug g at the rear, through which passes a handled adjustingscrew Gr, confined longitudinally to the slide B. On turning the screw either one or both of the rolls can be adjusted in position.
During the flanging process the rolls are in the position shown in Fig. 7 one roll only being inaction, and when it is desired to remove buckles then the carrier is shifted so as to bring both rolls into action, as shown in Fig. 8.
In some instances I may pivot the carrier to the slide B, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. The carrier Gr is mounted between the two brackets b b of the slide B and is pivoted thereto by a pin The rollers g g are carried by the forward end of the carrier G while the rear end extends between the bearing and has two perforations g in the present instance, through which can pass lockingbolts 9*, so that by drawing the bolts the carrier can be shifted to any one of three positions and readilv locked by one or both bolts.
In Figs. 11 and 12, I have shown a slide G mounted in a carrier B and the brackets of the carrier have a series of holes therein through which locking-bolts h h are passed, so as to lock the slide Or in either position to which it is adjusted.
he operation of my machine is as follows: If, for instance, a dished plate is to be flanged as shown in Fig. 1, it is clamped upon the head D by the clamp E, and the carrier for the Hanging-rollers g is adjusted so that one of said rollers presses upon the overhanging portion of the plate, as shown in said figure. As the plate is rotated the roller is gradually lowered by moving its slide in the quadrant so as to cause the overhanging portion of such plate to be turned down to form the flange. In flanging thin plates, however, the use of a single roll will in many cases cause the plate to buckle as the flange of the same is turned over, and the purpose of my invention is to reduce such buckling. During the formation of the flange and before itis completely turned to the position required the mechanism is so adjusted as to bring both rollers g 9 into action, as shown in Fig. 4. These rollers, with the anvil-roller f, work the buckle or crimp out of the flange, and they also complete the turning of the flange, producing a finished article free of a buckle or crimp and true in diameter.
Although I have shown and described my invention as applied to a machine having an adjustable and rotatable anvil, as the roller f, it will be understood that it can be applied to a machine having the ordinary anvil without departing from my invention.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a flanging-machine, of means for holding a plate to be flanged, an anvil, a carrier,a pair of flanging-rolls mounted thereon and situated side by side, and means whereby one or both of said rolls may be brought into engagement with one side of the plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a flanging-machine, of a head, means for clamping a plate to be flanged to said head, an adjustable roller against which said plate is flanged, an adjustable carrier, a'pair of rolls mounted thereon, means whereby one or both of said rolls may be brought into engagement with the flange of the plate, and means for locking said carrier in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a flanging-rnachine,
of a head, means for clamping a plate on said head, an adjustable roller against which the plate is flanged, a slide, a carrier mounted on said slide, a pair of rolls on said carrier for performing the fianging operation, and means for shifting said carrier whereby one or both of said rolls may be brought into engagement with the flange of the plate, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a Hanging-machine, of means for holding a plate to be flanged, an anvil, aflanging-head,a segmental slide, means for turning said slide, a carrier mounted on the slide and means for moving the carrier transversely across the slide and a pair of rollers mounted side by side on the carrier, substantially as described.
5. The combination in a flanging-machine, of means for holding a plate to be flanged, an anvil, a Hanging-head, a segmental slide on said head, transverse ways on the slide, a carrier mounted to slide on said ways, a transversely-arranged screw for shifting the carrier, two rolls arranged side by side on the carrier, substantially as described.
6. The combination in a Hanging-machine, of a convex former, a clamp for holding a dished plate on the former, a frame, an anvilroller carried thereby and arranged to pass under the edge of the former, a carrier and two flanged rollers mounted side by side on the carrier, substantially as described.
7 The combination in a flanging-machine of means for holding a plate to be flanged, an anvil, a carrier, two flanging-rollers arranged side by side on the carrier, the rollers bearing on the plate on each side of the anvil and means for turning the carrier, substantially as described.
