PATENT OFFICE.-
NEHEMIAH GUTHRIE, OF ITALY, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN L. ANDERSON, OF ITALY, TEXAS.
HAME-TUG- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,977, dated July 18, 1905. Application fil d April 12, 1905. Serial No. 255,131.
To all whmn it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, NEHEMIAH GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Italy, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to hame-tugs; and it consists in a tug embodying the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly defined in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the hame-tug constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention as connected to a trace. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the tug with some parts in elevation and the trace omitted. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4. 4 of Fig. 3.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which Y A is a trace, of leather or other suitable material, and B is my novel tug as a whole.
As clearly shown in the drawings, the tug B comprises a draft-bar a, of oblong form in cross-section having a head 6 at its forward end and means, preferably a leather lug 0 and a buckle d, at its rear end for connecting it to trace A, a casing 0, provided with a loggerhead f or other means to connect it to a hame, (not shown,) and also provided with an interior abutment g, loosely receiving the rod (0, and a coiled spring It, having coils of oblong form, Fig. 3, surrounding the bar a and interposed between the'head 6 thereof and the abutment 9, so as to cushion rearward draft on the bar, as when a horse commences to pull, and thereby relieve the strain on ahorse and effectually prevent breakage of the harness. The casing e is made up of a substantially flat inner section 70, of sheet metal, and a concavo-convex outer section Z, of sheet metal, the edges of which are riveted at intervals to those of the section 70, as indicated by m. These sections A: and Z are provided with grooves m, Fig. 4:, which receive the edges of and hold the abutment g, and their forward portions are disposed at opposite sides of and riveted to the loggerhead f, as shown. The outer section Z is also provided with keeper-loops p, of sheet metal, designed toreceive and hold the surplus portion of the trace A after the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. I
The casing-sections k and Z, the loops 1), the rod a, the abutment g, and the spring /L are all preferably of steel with a view of enabling them to withstand the rough usage to which hame-tugs are ordinarily subjected, and thereby prolong the usefulness of the improved tug as a Whole.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that the draft-bar a, the spring IL, and the casing e are of flat and narrow form, and hence present about the same thickness as an ordinary hame-tug, as is desirable; but it will be noticed that notwithstanding such flat and narrow form the spring is highly efficient in cushioning the draft-bar a, while the casing e is adapted to effectually protect the said spring against injury and the Weather. It will also be noticed that the abutment g is securely clamped and held between the sec-.
tions 71: and Z of the casing e, and hence is not likely to be casually moved lengthwise of the casing by pull imposed on the bar a and spring 72,.
I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the parts in the present embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and arrangement ofparts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a hame-tug, the combination of a flatform casing comprising an inner, sheet-metal section and an outer, sheet-metal section; said sections having their edge portions riveted together and also having grooves at an intermediate point in the length of the casing, tween the head of the bar and the abutment; I means at one end of the casing for connecting the said spring having oblong coils. the same to a hame, an apertured abutment In testimony whereof I have hereunto set arranged in the grooves of and clamped bemy hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- 5 tween the casing-sections, a draft-bar, of obnesses.
long form in cross-section, extending loosely I NEHEMIAH GUTHRIE. through the abutment and having a forward Witnesses: head, and a coiled spring surrounding the ALEX MOSELEY, draft-bar,within the casing, and interposed be- J OI-IN L. ANDERSON.
