ATTACHMENT FOR TROLLEY-POLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,964, dated July 18, 1905.

Be it known that I, PAUL H. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Trolley-Poles, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of interurban trolley-roads where high speeds are attained the possibility of accidental displacement of the underrunning trolley and the consequent possible tearing down of portions of the trolley-wire and supports therefor is a serious problem, and devices have been produced, such as the Knutson trolley-retriever, by means of which when the trolley becomes accidentally misplaced it will be automatically drawn downward away from the trolley-wire and the supports therefor. In devices of this kind, however, there is possibility after the contact member has slipped from the wire of its moving up and over the trolley-wire, so that when the contact member is automatically pulled down by the retriever it will be pulled down on top of the trolley-wire, and thus operate to pull the trolley-Wire away from its supports.
The object of my present invention is therefore to provide a simple device which may be attached to the trolley-pole or to the harp which supports the trolley-wheel or other contact member, which will prevent any possibility of the trolley-wheel or contact member being pulled down upon the top of the trolley-wire.
It will be apparent that while my device is especially designed for use in connection with automatic retrieving devices, yet it is equally useful in connection with any trolley-pole.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear end of a car the trolley of which is provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the attachment; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the relative positions of the attachment and the trolley-wire at a time when the trolley-wheel has slipped above the trolley-wire. In the drawings, 10 indicates a trolley-pole of any usual or desired type carrying a wheel or other contact member 11. The pole 10 is controllable by means of a cord 12, which is brought to an automatic retriever 13 of any desired type, several of such automatic retrievers now being in the market.
My improvement consists of a wedge-shaped clip 14, provided at its upper end with a suitable clamping eye 15 or other attaching means, by means of which the clip may be attached to the trolley-pole. If desired, the wedge 14 may be attached by other suitable means either to the trolley-pole or to the support for the contact member 11 without departing from my invention. Rope 12 may be attached to the pole or preferably will be attached to the lower point of the wedge 1 1, as shown in Fig. 3.
In operation should the contact member 11 slip from the trolley-wire 16 and pass above the same and through any cause be swung over on top of wire 16 the automatic retriever as soon as it begins to pull upon cord 12 will bring the wedge 14 in contact with wire 16, and said wedge will operate to throw the contact-shoe out of vertical alinement above the trolley-wire, so that it may be drawn down past the trolley-wire.
I claim as my invention- 1. An attachment for trolley-poles, consisting of a clip transversely wider at its middle than at the ends and provided at one end with means for attaching to a trolley-pole, and at the other end adapted to have the retrieverrope attached thereto, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with an underrunning contact member, of a clip attached thereto and wedge-shaped transversely of the line of the trolley-wire, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with an underrunning contact member and an automatic retriever attached thereto, of a clip attached to said contact member and wedge-shaped transversely of the line of the trolley-wire.
4.
