PATENT OEEIcE.
RICHARD TOM SHARMAN, OF DUBLIN, IRELAND, ASSIGNOR TO KAPP & PETERSON LIMITED, OF DUBLIN, IRELAND, A COMPANY.
TOBACCO-PIPE, CIGAR-HOLDER, OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,893, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed November 20,1903. Serial No. 181,911.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD ToM SHARMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 1 Ohalgrove Terrace, Dublin, Ireland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, Cigar-Holders, or the Like, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to tobacco-pipes and cigar and cigarette holders; and it consists, broadly, in forming the lip of the mouthpiece with a comparatively narrow slit through which the smoke from the bore of the mouthpiece passes into and is thereby spread or distributed in a fan-like manner in the mouth and so as to prevent the smoke impinging against the inside of the lips or cheeks of the person smoking.
As a result of repeated experiments, I find it essential in order that the smoke shall be properly spread and shall issue into the mouth in a comparatively cool condition that the slit extend right across the lip, so that the smoke entering the mouth be not divided into two or more columns and that said slit be of equal width throughout that is to say, in the form of a saw-cut. At the base of the slit I bore a hole running transversely across the lip to enable the mouthpiece and lip to be more readily cleaned, the construction of the lip beingsubstantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of part of a mouthpiece having my improved lip. Figs. 2 and 3 are a side and front elevation, respectively, of the same; and Fig. 4: is a side elevation of an alternative form of my improved lip, all the views being on a large scale.
In the figures, A denotes a part of the mouthpiece or stem of a tobacco-pipe or cigar or cigarette holder, and B the lip thereof, which I cut away at each side at b for the purpose hereinafter described. I form said lip with a slit or saw-cut O, extending across its whole Width, said slit being of equal width throughout, so that the smoke will issue therefrom as a thin layer, said smoke being not only properly spread in the mouth, but also rendered very cool and pleasant. At the base of the slit I bore a hole D, running transversely across the lip, so that the bore E of the mouthpiece A may be readily cleaned by passing a feather or equivalent therethrough, whereby any deleterious matter is pushed into the hole D, whence it may be removed by a wire or feather or other suitable means.
The sides of the lip are preferably cut away at 7), as already stated, to render the cleaning of the transverse bore more easy and also to prevent the smoke impinging againstthe inside of the lips or cheeks of the person smoking, which would cause soreness after a short time.
It will be obvious that the slit C may be at any desired angle-for example, as shown in Fig. 4..
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A mouthpiece for tobacco pipes, cigarholders or cigarette-holders having a lip formed with a slit of equal width across it, a transverse hole at the base of said slit, and said lip having its sides cut away, all for the purposes and substantially as described and illustrated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD TOM SI-IARMAN.
