PATENTED JULY 11 R. A. BROWN.
BUCKLE APPLICATION FILED AUG. 13. 1904.
WWW-zoom UNITED STATES Patented July 11, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROYL ANDREW BROWN, OF ASHLAND. OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE'HALF TO GEORGE S. LUCAS, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,699, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed August 13, 1904. Serial No. 220.623.
T0 or whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Ron. ANDREW BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to securing devices, and more particularly to a form of buckle designed primarily for use upon straps commonly employed by mail-carriers in holding bundles of mail in position; and my object is to provide a buckle or securing device which will be very easily controlled and by means of which the strap to which it is attached may be readily connected or disconnected from any object to which it has been applied, as a package of mail-matter, books, &c.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention applied to use upon'a strap of the usual or any preferred construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my buckle and strap with which it is placed in cooperation. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view showing the two component parts of my buckle or securing device separated from each other.
It will be observed from the following description that my buckle or securing device possesses great simplicity of construction, there being but two parts of the buckle, each readily fashioned, as at one operation of manufacture, from suitable sheet metal, as will be readily obvious.
For convenience of reference to the various elements and cooperating accessories of my invention numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part through out the several views.
In materializing my invention 1 provide a buckle-frame proper at the front, which, as
will be observed by reference to Fig. 3, comprises the side members 1 and 2 and the end sections 3 and 4, together with the intermediate section or cross-bar 5, and designed to cooperate with this framework or buckle proper is the device at the rear (also shown in Fig. 3) and constituting the clamping-jaw of the buckle or securing device, by means of which the free end of the strap is detachably engaged at will.
The strap-securing device comprises the body portion 6, having the integral loop extension 7 and also having upon one side a plurality of teeth or serrations 8, located within the loop-like member 7, but so disposed that there will be ample room between the ends of the teeth and said loop.
The body portion 6 is formed of suflicient length whereby the extensions or end sections proper, 9, are provided, and the body portion 6 is placed in permanent union with the buckleframe proper by bending the end sections or extensions 9 loosely in front of and around a contiguous part of the side sections 1 and 2, whereby the body portion 6 may slide on and be moved relatively to the buckle-frame.
In Fig. 1 it will be observed that the extensions 9 are shown in a curved position, wrapping completely around the side bars or members 1 and 2, while the end of the strap 10 is permanently connected to the cross-bar 5 in any preferred way, as by stitching or by means of the rivet 11 or equivalent thereof, and extends at the rear of the end section 3.
It will be further observed by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 that the loop member 7 is disposed alongside of the end section 4, and the free end 12 of the strap may therefore be readily passed down between the bars or sections 1 and 7 and the teeth 8; but since the member 6 is disposed movably upon the buckle-frame it follows that the strain of the strap will bear against the bar 7 and incidentally draw the teeth tightly in engagement with a contiguous part of the strap, whereby the latter will be reliably secured against slipping past said teeth.
It is further obvious that the tighter the against the loop member or bar 7, the more tightly will the strap be engaged by said teeth.
Inasmuch as I provide no buckle-tongue, it follows that there is no necessity of perforating the strap to receive said part, as is com' men with buckles now in use.
It will be found that the teeth will take into a contiguous part of the strap whether made of leather or other material and without injury thereto will prevent the same from slipping out of an adjusted position.
It will thus be seen that my securing device or buckle is of very simple construction, and the parts thereof may be very cheaply manufactured and each readily assembled in its respective operative position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iv claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A buckle comprising a front frame constructed with side members, inner and outer end sections and an intermediate section, a sliding rear frame constructed with a body portion having extensions bent in front of the front frame, a loop extension, and teeth located on the inner side of the body portion and projecting through the front frame, a strap secured at one end to the intermediate section and extending in rear of the inner end section 3
