T0 ALL WHOM-IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MAJOR H. FISHER, of Bridgeport, in the county ofrFaireld, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Machine for Making Rasps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side'view,
Figure 2 a top view,
Figure 3 a face view,
Figure 4 an edge view of the principal cam,
Figure 5, a detached sectional view ofthe cutter and its connection, and in Figure 6 a face view of arr-ordinary rasp. Y
This invention is designed forV cutting'c'ommon raps, such as are used by hrse-shoers and others, and consistsi First, in the arrangement of the'cutter upon its holder, so that while it is held rmly, it is allowed to turn up at its point as it enters the steel, so as to throw up the tooth ofthe rasp. A f
Second, in hanging the tool-holder ata-,point one side from the centre of the traverse of the cutter, so as to make the traverse of the cutter to advance as it proceeds across the rasp.
l Third, in the arrangement of a cam,` in combination with the cutter-holder, so as to cause it to intermit-v tently move across the rasp-blank, so as to raise the teeth at the proper-point, and the requisite numberof'teeth' in the different rows, that is to say, one more tooth in each alternate row than thereis in thc immediate preceding row; and
Fourth, in imparting to the bed in which the rasp is placed a movement relative tothe transverse movement ofthe cutter, so that the teeth cut will be in rows at right angles to the edge of the rasp. i
. To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
v A'In fig. 5 a top view of the rasp is shown, where, it will be seen, there are nine teeth in one row, eight in the next, Yand soon, alternating nine and eight, or if agreater or less number, always that same variation of one more tooth in one row than there is in the next.
A is the frame'of the machine, which supports the operative mechanism; B, the `cutter-holder, supported in a shaft, C, the sa'id shaft having its bearings in the lframe at c. s The said, cutter-har passesthrough the said shaft, and is pivoted thereon at one side of the centre, at a. D, the cutter,'is attached to theAholder\B, by a stirrup, E, as seen in iig. v5 the said stirrup passing through the mortisevsfin the saidcutter, `and extending hackvheneath the holder, andso as to support the tool in itsy proper position, and is held back by a sprin'g,\f, the said spring being suicicnt to hold the tool firmly in its position, and yet ,so that when it strikes into the steel, the inclination upon the edge of thecutter tending forward, the cutter will cut under, as denoted in red, and thus turn up the tooth on the rasp. The cutter is removed by releasing the spring which holds it in position; i
By hanging the cutter-holder B at the point a, and the point a being at yone edge of the rasp, or still farther from the centre line thereof, and the cutter D swinging from that point, it will be seen that the arc described by the centre approaches from ,the starting-point toward the shaftl C; that ris to say, that the cutter, passing across the hlank, when it. reaches the opposite side, is nearer to the shaft C than when it started,Y but as itis desirable to cut the line of the teeth across the cutter at right angles to the edgeof the rasp, it is necessary to give to the blank-a movement relatively tolthe arc described by the cutter, so that the said arc and the said movement will direct the tool to strike the blank in'a li-ne at right angles across the face of the blank.
kann 2 The object, therefore, of hanging thetool-holder at one4 side is, that this required relative movement of the blank is more easily attained than if the tool be moved .in an arc described from a. point centrally on the blank. To give this relative movement to the blank,'I arrange a screw, F, which is attached to the blankh'older G, and operated from the shaftvH, so as to give the required relative movement. The shaft C is operated.v
through an eccentric, I, andaiconnecting-rod, J, as'seen in figs. 1 and 2, to give to the cutter the movement required to strike the blank.
The cutter-holder B extentlst hrough the shaft C, and attached to a sliding bar, K. The said slidngbar is operated by a cam, L, the said cam being seen enlarged in gs. 3 and 4. The-face of the said cam. is divided between thc opposite points 1 and 1, so that upon one side there is one less projection than upon the other, so that moving:r in the .direction denoted by the arrow, a notch is cut at 1, another at 2', another at 3', then the vslide falls back to the first position seen in iig. 2; then, by the projections 1, 2, 3, and 4, the nextrow of teeth are out; then, falling bach, thefthird row of thenn will be cut, and-sc on, the number of projections on the cam governing the number of teeth, which must alwaysfbe one more in one row than in the next.
Having thus fully described my invention, Awhat I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, not .the parts hereafter specified in severalty, but
1. Attaching the cutter D to the 'holder B, by means of the stirrup E and springf, when the said stirrup is arranged tosupport the cutter, and at the same-time to allow the point toturn up,`substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. v
2. In combination Awith the ,holder B', arranged ancl'operated Aast-above, I claim the blank-holder G, and mechanism, substantially as described, for imparting to the said holder a movement relatively to the movex'nent of the cutter across the blank, so that the tceth'cut in each row shall be at right angles to the edge of the rasp,
substantially as herein set forth.
