Be it known that I, ISAAC Goonsrnn'n, of Norwich, inthe county of-New London, andSwtate of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Machine. forCut-tng Files; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make andl use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,l in which- Figure 1 is a vside sectional view of my'inventiou taken in the line x fr, iig. 3.

Thecutter Mis tted obliquely in the stock I, so as to .make an oblique and Adiagonal cut in the file blank, see hg. 1,) and to the front and rear sides of the stock I therel are attached respectively springs, NN, the use of which will presently be shown.y The upper edgeof the arm F is of curved form, :bs-shown att'iniig, 1, and the cuter part of said arm rests and works upon a cross-bar, j, 4attached to the lower 4parts of the uprights G G by screws,7c,whicli pass through vertical oblong slots, Z, in the crossbar, into the uprights, andadmit ofthe cross-barj being adjusted higher or longer, as may be desired. From one side of the cutter-stock I a pin, o, projects, underneath which vthe arm F works; anelli is a taper screw, which -.passes horizontally through one of the uprights, G, and enters the slot fin' the cutter-stock I, (see g. Q is a sliding bed, which istted and works between parallel guides, p p, attached to the upper surface of the base or bed-plate A; and R is a spring clamp or pressure plate, the ends of which are'tted on screws, gq, in -the baseer bed-plate A. This spring clamp or pressure plate bears upon the file blank on the bed Q, andthe shank euld of the blank S is'tted under aspx-ing, T,.at one end of the bed Q. TheV spring 'I and clamp or pressure plate R hold the blank in' proper position onjthe bed Q, and the 'pressure of the plate R on the' blank S may be regulated as desired bly/.adjusting the screws qq.
The operation is as follows: The file blank' S is properly secured on' the sliding bed Q by means of the spring 'I and pressure plate R, as described,the end of the blank near the shank bein-g' under the pressure i plate R. Each time the arm F is moved forward under the revolutions of the crank-pulley D, the curved upper edge, z', of said arm acts against the pin o, raises 'the cutter-stock I, While the pin O of the arm F comes in contact with the spring N', and shoves outwardlthe cutter-stock. By these means the cutter M is raised from the blank S, and moved outward so as to descend upon the blank for a succeeding cut, the hammer H falling upon the cutter-stock when the cutter M reaches the blank'. Directly after` the hammer H falls upon the cutter-stock, and a cut is given the blank S, the pin O presses against the spring N, the arm F being drawn back, and the blank and bed Q are moved in the direction indicated by arrow 1. 1his constitutes the feed movement; the cutter M itself being used as a medium to feed the blank along. At the termination of this feed movement, the
cutter M is raised und shoved'outward for a succeeding cut, as previously described. The length of the feed movement is 'regulated by adjusting the pin O in its slot, m, and the length of the outward movement of thc cutter M by adjusting the screw P, screwing the same a greater or less distance into the slotf, the taper form of the screw regulating the swinging movement of the cutter-stock. In order to give the reverse or cross oblique cut to the tile blank, I insert another cutter-stock in the machine, having its slot, g, made in areversc oblique position to the other.
It will be seen from the above description that the machine is composed of but few parts, is very simple in construction, and may be manufactured at a reasonable cost. v
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. the swinging hammer H, operated through the medium of the arm E and crank-pulley D, in combination with the cutter-stockll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arm F, provided'with the pins O O and the upper .curved edge z', in combination with the cutterstock I, provided with the springs N'N, the pin o, and slot f to receive the shaft L on which the cutter-stock Works, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. A
3. The taper screw l?, in combi'nationwith the slotted cutter-stock I, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
4, The spring T, attached 'to the sliding bed Q, in combination with the spring clamp or pressure plate R, attached to the base A by the screws gg, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
