Be itknown that we, OnAuLns R. Hour and TILLIAM L. Henson, citizens of the United States, residing at Middlesworth, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, havcinvented a new and useful End-Gate, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in end-gates.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of end-gates and to provide a simple and comparatively inex pensive one adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary wagon body or bed without interfering with the ordinary end-gate and capable of being readily lowered to a slightly-inclined position to form a shoveling or scoop board.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrifieing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an end-gate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the end-gate being arranged to form a shoveling or scoop board. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the angle-plate, which forms an eye for the link and a catch for the supporting-rod. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the construction of the pivots of the links. Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the construction of the loops for the supportingrods.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates an end-gate provided with sides or wings 2 and adapted to be arranged in an upright position at the rear end of a wagonbody 3, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and capable of being lowered to a slightly-inclined position to form a shoveling or scoop board, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The sides or wings snugly embrace the sides of the wagon body or bed and are arranged on the exterior thereof, and there is no liability of the contents of the wagon-bod y escaping when the end-gate is closed.

The end-gate is hinged to the wagon-body by means of a pair of links or bars 4., pivoted at their upper ends to the wagon-body and provided at their lower ends with hooks 5, forming open eyes and adapted to engage eyes 6 of the end-gate. The eye 6 consists of an opening formed in one arm of an angle-plate 7, which is arranged at each side of the endgate and which serves to reinforce and support the end-gate and the adjacent side or wing. One of the arms is arranged at the back or rear face of the endgate, and the other arm extends forwardly on the outer face of the side or win The end-gate is provided at the eyes or openings 6 with slots 8 to accommodate the links or bars 4. The links or bars 4 are provided at their upper ends with perforations for the reception of pivots 9, preferably formed integral with plates 10 and perforated to receive keys 11 or other suitable fastening devices for retaining the links or bars on them. The plates are secured to vertical cleats 12, which are bolted to the inner faces of the sides of the wagon-body. The hooks 5 serve as bearings for the endgate, which is adapted to be swung upward and downward, as will be readily understood, and the end-gate is adapted to be readily disengaged from the hooks of the links or bars. The keys 11 permit the bars to be also removed when it is desired to detach the end-gate.

The end-gate is supported in an inclined position and is locked in a vertical position by means of rods 13, each provided at one end with an eye or loop 14, which is linked into an eye 15 of the adjacent side or wing. The eye 15 is provided with a slotted or bifurcated shank 16, which receives the side or wing and which is suitably secured to the same. The supporting-rod extends through a loop 17,

mounted on the outer face of the side of the wagon-body, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The loop is preferably cast integral with a plate 18, having spurs 19 for engaging the wagon-body and provided with perforations 20 for the reception of screws, bolts, or other suitable fastening devices for securing the plate to the wagon-body. The other end of the rod is provided with a hook 22, adapted to engage the loop 17 when the end-gate is arranged to form a shoveling or scoop board. When the end-gate is closed, the rod extends downward and is adapted tobe engaged with a hook or catch 23 of the forwardly-extending arm of the angle-plate, whereby the endgate is securely locked in its closed position.

The wagon body or bed is provided at opposite sides with cleats arranged in pairs to receive an ordinary end-gate 24:, the use of which is not interfered with by the end-gate 1.

It will be seen that the end-gate 1 is securely locked in its closed position and that it is firmly held in place when it is arranged to form a scoop or shoveling board and there is no liability of it being accidentally jarred out of place.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a wagon-body provided with a loop, an end-gate having a wing, a link pivotally mounted on the interior of the wagonbody and having a hook, a rod hinged to the wing and provided with means for engaging the loop and adapted to extend through the gate provided at its bottom with a slot and having a side or wing, of an angle-plate secured to the end-gate and composed of two integral arms one arm being arranged on the rear face of the end-gate and provided with an opening registering with the said slot, the other arm of the angle-plate being extended forwardly on the side or wing and provided with a terminal catch, a link pivotally con nected with the Wagon body at the inner face of the side and extending through the slot of the end-gate and terminating in a hook engaging the opening of the angle-plate, a loop mounted on the body, and a rod connected with the end-gate and adapted to engage the loop and arranged to extend through the same for engaging the said catch.
