Description

ein. reaeea.
Mirino g Patented lluly t, lQU.
l/-iflrinvir lelirjrilnnl SPEClLFClLTON folming part of Letters Patent No. 794,053, dated July l, 1905.
Application lilcfl January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,418.
lie it known that l', Louie J Solution, Jr., a citizen ol the United States, reeidingatlhiladelphia, in the county of llhiladelphia and State ol" fll'enneylvania, have invented a new and ueeliul Improvement in Valves, ol which the following' is a epeeilication.
lli/ly invention relates to coche or valves.
lt consists et a novel construction oll a waste, by which liquid is iiermitted to paez-s lromthe outlet end ot the cock when the same ie closed.
lt 'further consists oil means l'or irevi'mting waete at such outlet when the cock ie partially or fully open.
llt Further consists of means lor providing' a waterway o l relatively large .sis/,e and capable of withstandingr a high pressure.
lt `further consiste of other novel Features of construction, all as will be hereinafter lully set 'loi-th.
Although all or some ol the leatureil of my invention may be applied to dil'l'eront sorts ot cocks or valves and although it obvious that all of the tentures olf the invention need not be used in the same construetioin l have shown as the embodiment ol'l my invention a stop and wastecoclowhich ie rep resented iu the drawing' partly in vertical section and partly in elevatioin and in which l designates a body having,l inlet and outlet ends 2 and Ill, respectively and a chamber 4, surmouuted by ia bonnet 5, in which is a vertical iicylindric portion (5, having' a Shoulder i at its upper end. 'lche bonnet 5 intcriorly and exteriorly threaded to recei ve acorresiiondingly-th readed nut 8 and a cap 9. l/lfithin the body l, ol the cock is an angeiarly-dieposed .seat lll. adiaeent which at ite lower end ie a lue' llV7 having a substantially vertical lace 19,. Un the Seat l rests a washer i3, Secured 'to a valveplate l/l. The plate llt may he integral with or secured to a hollow stem or elecve le and may have a brace .lo connectingI the eleeve and valve. llt the upper end olf the sleeve l is a shoulder il, on which is seated a cupehai'ied washer lil, the exterior diameter ol which eorrespmids to the interior diameter of the eylindrie portion 6. il. spindle Ylll has at its upper end the usual handle 2O and ie provided with au oll'set 2l., engaged between the lower end ol the threaded nutand an annular projectiiim .22 near the upper end o'l the bon' net 3. 'lhe lower end ol the spindle l2) is threaded at 23 toeng'ag'e inthe threaded sleeve 15. ,Extending vertically through the spindle Il) is a here 2t, having' a lateral opening' 251mm' the lower end ol the threaded portion 22:5, ,l have also shown a lateral opening' 2G through the wall ol the chamber l.
lhe operation of my deviee will he readily understood from au inspection ol the drawing'. lt will be seen that when the valve is closed, as Shown, the washer 13 is lirmly held between the valve-seat l0 and the valve-plate ,14. ,lt will-also he seen that any lnesaure of water lroni the inlet end 2 ot' the cock bearing; against the plate lill; will cause the lower side el the plate to press against the vertical portion Vl2 olf the lug; ll which lug will thus Serve to take the strain and prevent the plate from being' lilted from its seat. eral opening' Z5 ol the spindle lll is new open, itis evident that any liquid contained in a pipe or vessel connected with the outlet end olE the Cock will be permitted to waete through the bore 2d; olf the spindle or lateral aperture 26 in the upper portion ol the bonnet 5. llt is evident that either one olE these openingemthat is, the here 2l; or the lateral aperture 26m-may bedifipensed with. l have shown both to indicate that the use ol either is in z'tceordnnce with my invention. lllhen the cock or `ate is opened by raising' the 'alve llt from its seat and into the chamber t1 it in evident that the entire waterway will he clear7 so that practically no resistance in oll'ered to the passage ol liquid therethrough. Alt in i lso evident that the aperture will be engaged within the Sleeve 15 and that the cup-washer i8 will epeedily enter and lill the chamber (i in the upper portion o'lt the bonnet 5, eo that almost ae soon as the valve beginn to open the waste will he eut oli. lWhen the valve is Fully open, it is evident that the upper part ellv the culji-waeher 18 will Seat against the shoulder 7 at the upper end o'l the chamber (i. /llt the same time the annular shoulder 2T will hear against 'the Shoulder at the lower end ol the As the latchamber 6, thereby absolutely preventingV loss of liquid through either or both of the Wasteexits 2% and 26.
The advantages of my device are the open waterway produced by the raising' oi' the valve 14E inte the chamber the large chamber in the cock in which the valve is received when the cool; is open, the provision for cutting` oil'I the' waste as soon as the cock begins to open, and for absolutely cutting it oil' when the eocl; is fully opened.
lt is evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and. l do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having` thus described my invention, what l claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
ln a cecl; or valve, a body having a substantially straight passage therefor, providing a waterway, a bonnet removably secured to said body, a chamber of reduced size in said bonnet above said body, said chamber having,` 1
a Waste-opening, a valve movable transversely of said Waterway and adapted to control 4the same, a spindle for said valve and means for operating the same to raise and lower said valve, cup-Washer mounted upon said stem and movable therewith and bodily removed vfrom said chamber to provide a 'free passage to the waste-opening' when the valve is closed and adapted to lill said chamber When the valve is raised from its seat, whereby said valve-opening is immediately closed and said cup-Washer being adapted to closely tit said chamber and to be forced against the sides thereof by the Yforce of the water and a shoulder or second valve movable with said spindle, said second valve being adapted to bear against the shoulder or wall at the loiver end or' the chamber forming a `positive closure, and preventing any pressure from reaching` the cupyalve.
