SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,036, dated J uly 4., 1905. Application filed November 12, 1904. Serial No. 232,490.
To rn/t w/m'm/ ITI'; rim/y concern/.-
ljie it known that l', TnAnnmUs l). MQCALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city oi St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in illents, of which the following is aspecilication.
lt ly invention is in the nature of an improved tent oi. the same general character as those heretofore patented by me October 16, 1900, No. (359,981, and ()ctober 8, 1901, No. (384,086, the same being light portable tents with canvas floors forming a part of the tent.
l /l y invention is designed to provide a tent of this general character which may be used singly or in pairs to form a larger shelter-tent, as will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the tent spread out llat. big. 2 is a perspective view of the same set up. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of two ol the tents combined to form an open shelter-tent. .liig. at is a su u ilememial section, and l ig. is a detail view showing the connection of the elastic distending-ribs.
in the drawings, l1 ig. 1, 3 is the rectangular lloor or extra heavy canvas having at each end an attached triangular section 2, to whose opposite sides are joined the segmental wingpieces l 1. Along one side of the floor portion 3 is joined the main cover portion 4:. This portion is permanently joined to the floor along the line ll B, and its outer edge A A is designed to extend upwardly and over and down to the other edge B B ol the floor, a llap t. along this edge of the floor-section extending up inside of the cover-section t. The cover-section l is distended in semicircular elevation by three pairs of elastic ribs 6, which are arranged in suitable sheaths or keepers in the cover 4. For the end ribs the sheaths are quite close together, and the bare portions of the ribs between the sheaths form attachingpoints for a series of hooks 72, along each curved edge of the segmental wings 1. The two ribs of each pair have inthe middle a sliding or double interlocking connection, which may be conveniently formed, as in Fig. 5, by turning a few coils in each rib near its end and then reciprocally sticking the free end of each rib into the coil of its companion. When the cover t is distended over the ribs, its lree edge is made last by the cords 5, which engage with holes 5 along the edge of the floor-flap (J. The ribs at their ends next to the ground are formed with eyes 8 and 9, which receive tiecords for connecting them to the floor. At the line of junction of the triangular end pieces "2 and wings I l there is at each end a ring w, into which cords are looped to distend the tent lengthwise. These cords are secured to pegs driven into the ground, as seen in F 2.
if desired to form an open shelter-tent, two of the tents shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are assembled as seen in Fig. 3--that is to say, the cover-section 4.- of each tent is carried up, so as to leave the adjacent sides of the two tents open. in large tents the cover-sections are to be directly joined over a ridge-pole or line stretched between two trees; but for small tents a supplemental section 1.1 is used to give increased space. This supplemental scction (shown in detail in Fig. t) when not required for a double or shelter tent is to be used as a second floor-section 3 to give double thickness to the floor or to form a carpet for the trout, and it constitutes a part of each single-tent equipment. hen the sheltertent is set up, as in .ll ig. 3, guy-lines 13 connect the tops of the tent-poles to the same pegs which secure the ends of the individual tents. in this arrangement the floor-sections 2 and 3 remain in position upon the ground, Forming a pallet to recline on, and the end wingsl remain hooked on one side to the cover-section 41 and in erect position, forming pockets for storage. At each end of the cover-section 4 (see Fig. 1) there is formed a hem 4c, in which is contained the draw-strings 4Q. 'lhesc draw-strings draw the canvas down at the ends, seen in Fig. 2, so-as to break or lap over the crack or joint when the ends are hooked up.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tent consisting of a rectangi'ilar tloorsection having a triangular section joined onto each end of the lloor-section and hating at each end two segmental sections joined to the sides of each triangular end section and having curved edges provided with fastening devices, and a main cover-section having one side joined to one side of the floor-section and its other side provided with fastening devices to connect with the other side of the floor-section and transverse distcnding-rihs substantially as shown and described.
2. A tent consisting of a rectangular floorsection having a triangular section joined onto 3. A shelter-tent, consisting of two similar tents, each comprising a floor-section, tapering end inclosurcs provided with means for distcnding the same longitudinally and a cover portion connected with one side of the floorsection and extending upwardly to cooperate with a similar cover-section, and a ridge-support for the cover-sections substantially as described.
4:. A tent provided with pairs of elastic transverse distending ribs, each rib being formed at one end with one or more coils with the end extended beyond the coil or coils and said two ends being adapted to interlock in a reciprocal way by the extension of the straight end of one rib of each pair into the coil or coils of its mate substantially as shown and described.
