Application filed March 22, 1905., Serial No. 251,508.
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, il'nsse D. Knnnnin), a citizen of the United idtates of America, and a resident of Seneca, county of Nemaha, {State of .ltansas, have in vented. certain new and use ful lin 'n'oveinents in 'lwine-Uutters, of which the following is a full and clcarspccilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- l igure 1 is a perspective view showing my device attached to a counter or table adjacent to a twine-cup; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the guard-spring; Fig. 3, a plan view of the knife detached; Fig. at, a detail section. on the line i 4 of Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, and efficient twine cutter especially adapted for the use of persons in the mail service, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
To the accomplishment of this object and such others as may hereinafter appear theinvention consists of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had. to the accompaliiying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which. the same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
.lteferring to the drawings by letter, a des igl'iates a twine-cu p of any suitable construction, and adjacent to this cup secured my improved cutter. '.l.he cutter consists of a flat shank 7), adapted to be secured to the tablc-top by screws 0, and a cuttingblade cl, which is preferably formed integral with said shank 7), the connecting portion of the flat piece of metal from which the device is made being twisted at c to turn the cutting edge of the knife upward. 'lhe knife-blade curves outward and upward from the table, and its upper end is provided with an elliptical or rounded guard-Imob f.
it guard-s n'ing is attached by a screw 5 to the shank just back of its connection to the blade and curves upward and outward and downward past the cutting edge.
This guard consists, preferably, ofasingle piece of s )ringwire bent midway its ends to form an eye l1 for the passage of the screw 7, the two parts or members vi of the wircbeing brought together or nearly together and the free ends thereof beingdisconnected and separated so as to em brace the blade, as shown. This guard-spring crosses the edges of the blade at a short dis tance from its upper end, and the two free ends of its spring members lie upon and embrace the opposite sides of the blade. To clamp the two free members of the guard against the opposite sides of the blade, ll employ a sliding loop y'.
it will be observed that the twine is cut by simply forcing it down in the crotch formed by the rounded front edge of the guard and the adjacent cutting edge of the blade, the guard members yielding sufficiently to give a draw out, and thus sever the string quickly and neatly. The knob f prevents the user from injuring his or her hand s and is also of importance in preventing the blade cuttinginto packages or the wrappers thereon when the dcvice is used for severing the strings when the strings are around packages that it is desired to open.
What if claim, and desire to secure by fluctters Patent, is
in a twine-cutter of the class set forth, the combination of a shank adapted to be attached to a support and carrying an 1ipward-turnod blade whose edge is turned upward and whose upper end is provided with a guard-knob and a yielding guard-spring attached to the shank and extending forward and downward across the cutting edge of said blade, the downwardturned free end of this guru-d being composed of two members embracing the opposite sides of the blade, for the purposes set forth.
in testimony whereof .l. hereunto allix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 20th day of March, 1905.
