Description

@uitrit 1:1125 gamut @frn ROBERT ROWAN, 0F PAR-NASSUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 79,399, dated June 30, 1868.
i IMPBOVED SGAFFOLD AND LADDER.
T0 ALL WHQM IT; MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT; Rowan, of Parnassus, in thccounty ot'Westmor'eland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved-Ladder and Scatiold, for paintingand other purposes; and I .do hereby declare that the folldwing is a full,`clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable 'those skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had.to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
'.lhis invention relates to an apparatus for facilita-ting the operation of painting buildings, and which is adapted to other uses where work is to be performed on buildings in elevated situations.
' And it consists in a horizontal bar, supported at any desired height from the ground, and in providing it with pulleys at cach end, and in a ladder and traversing-frame, arranged in suoli a manner that the ladderA may be moved laterally either way from the middle of the bar, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
' The drawing represents an elevation of the apparatus.
A. is the bar.
B is the ladder. l
C represents the standards by which the bar is supported.
D ispthe traversing-frame, from which the ladder is suspended.
E E are the traversing-rollers.
There is a round guide-rod or metallic track on'top ofthe bar A, as seen at e, which the rollers are grooved or formed to fit, and by which they are guided as they traverse back and forth.
ff represent stirrups, which are suspended from the frame D, which enclose the bar A, with hooks at their hottomends, to which the sides of the ladder are attached, as seen in the drawing.
g g are pulleys in these stirrups, which revolve on pivots. i
h L are pulleys at the ends of the bar A.
-The ladder is made double, or in the formiof a square, as seen in the detached view,J, .so that one or more scaolds or platforms may be made ontlieladder, from which the mechanic may fprosecute his work, as painting or other occupation. l
'lhese scaiolds will allow the workman to ascend or descend, as his work may require, butto move himself either way laterally I apply ropes k 7c to each end of the traversing-'frame A. l
These ropes extend from the ends of the frame, over the pulleys h 71, on the ends of the barA, and over the pulleysgg on the`stirrupsff, from which the enels ofthe ropes hang down within reach of theworkman, as seen.
By drawing upon either ofthe ropes,'the traversing-frame D and the ladder or scaffold will be moved tothe right or to the left, as. may be desired, without moving the workman from his seat or station ou the scaffold.
The standards C C will stand in a bracing position, leaning against the building, but Athe bar A may bcsupported from windows, or in any other suitable manner. v
The ladder may made single, like ordinary ladders, if desired, but a better and more convenient platform or scaffold is made by having the ladder made double.
The ladder may be made with either lcxible or rigid sides, but theilcxible sides allow the apparatus to be transported with greater ense, and to be folded away in a small space whennot in use'.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A The bar A andthe traversingframe D, in combination with a ladder or scaffold, when arranged and operated substantially' ns and for the purposes-hereinvshown and described.
The above specification of my invention-'signed by me, this 20th day of April, 1868.
" ROBERT ROWAN.
