Be it known that I, GUSTAVE H. ROTH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts,I have invented a new-'and useful Hand Coal-Sitter; and I do hereby declare the sameto be fully described in the following specification, and represented in ythe accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, Y i

It consists, rst, of ascoop, A, of metal, and with teeth or prongs, a, a, &c., arranged at one end of it; second, of. a. strap or loop, B, fixed, at or near its ends, to the s ,coop,an`d arranged therewith, as shown -in figs. 1, 2, and 3 third, of a hand-guard, C, or plate of wood or otherproper heat-non-conducting material, affixed to the Vunder side ofthe scoop-hooks c a, and to e'wooden bar, the whole being arranged withlthe scoop and the strap or loop B, in manner as' shown iny the drawings.-l

In. using this lifter, a pair of them is to he employed, one for each hand, the hand being passed through the loop B, with the fingers and palm resting against the guard C. Then, by scooping up the ashes with both the sifters, and moving them laterally with quick reciprocating motions, the liner parts of the mass may be sifted through the spaces between the teeth, leaving the coal or coal-ser portions in the scoop.

These sifters have been found to be very efficient for the purpose for which they are intended.

I claim the arrangement and combination of` the hand-loop B, the guard C,'a.nd'the scoop A, made and provided with teeth, the whole being substantially as and for the purpose described. G: H. ROTH.
