Letters Patent No. 79,394, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES-FDR -SBCURING EYE-GLASSES.
@its .Srta-nh Istant tu in time ttters rztin nur mating putt nf its sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY. CON CERN:
Be it knownl that I, ALBEREW. ROBERTS, of the city and county of Hartfo1d,and State of Connecticut, have invented alcertain new and useful'InJprovement in Device for Securing Eye-Glasses to wearing-apparel; and toenable others skilled in the art. to smake and use the same, I will proceed to describe by referringto the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures'.
The natureof this invention will be understood from the specification and drawings.
The object desireclfto be attained thereby is` to secure the .glasses tothegarment, so that they play be conveniently placed upon theface or nose, and whenn-ot wanted for use, the tape'or cord will be taken up to prevent them from dangling about the person', whereby they would be liable to be brbken Aor detached. i
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a frontview ofthe device.
Figure 2 is a back side view of a spring, reel, and case.
Figure 3 is a buck side View of a plate, pin, and catch.
Figurefl is a section of the device.
Figure5 is an inside View ofthe plate and catch.
Figure 6 is asideview of the reel, having-notches on tsedge.
Figure 7 is a face view of the reel.
Figure 8 is a back plate, showing how a button may beattached for securing it to button-hole of a garment.
.' Figure'Qis an edge view ofthe same. i
Figure 10 is a view of the'back plate, showing how ears may be attached for sewingit to agarment.
-Figurell is an edge view' of the same. i
Figure 12 is a view ofthe back plate, showing how hooks may be attached for hooking it-to a garment.
Figure 13 is an edge View of the same. I
In the manufacture of this device, I construct the case of metaL-or any other suitable material, and of any desired form or shape.
A is the case. B is a plate, iitted into the back side of the case, taking itsV bearing on the shoulder C fornied in thc edge of the case. The plate B is fastened to tli'ecase A bya screw, D,-whichvpasses through the centre of the' plate B, and is screwed into 'the'hub E, which is inI or near the eentreof the case A.K On the back side of the plate B is a pin, B', attached in the yusual way, so that the fixture may be fastened to the garment at any desired point. Between `the plates of the case A and the plate IB, is a reel, F. On the outer periphery of this reel is a. groove, G, to' receive the tape or cord H, one end'being fastened to the reel at F; the other end thereof passes through a hole, I, in the case, and attached to'the eye-glasses J. Insidef the reel F is a hook, K, on which one end of the spring L is fastened. The other endet' said spring is attached to thehub E, which also has a hook, K. On one edge of the ange of thev rcel F is a ratchegcut to .receive the pawl`or catch M', which is attached to a projecting edge of the plate B, and the lower end made .to fit the ratchet. i
The operation of this device is-as follows: The device' is fastened to the gai-nient by hooking, sewing, buttoninglg,` or apin very mnchdikc those used on breas t-pir rs,;k the outer end ofthe cord or tape being attached tothe eye-glasses, and the device being attached in any suitable way to Ythe garment. When itis desirabl'eto use the glasses, the cordis pulled out of the case the` required distance, and the spring or catch is moved up into the notches of the reel, (lhe'reelwill be held in a iixcd position,`) andwh'cn it is desirablezto'wind up the tord, thc' catch is released from the ratchet, and` the'spring actuatcs the reel -to windnp'the cord or tape.
The advantage of this invention is to prevent the glasses being scratched. when/carried inv the pocket; to
. do 'away'.witli the necessity of a case, in which to carry the glasses; to preventlosing'the g1 `.sesby laying them down and'leaving them unnoticed, and provide a ready means of using the glasses when dressed with a heavy over-garment.
I believe I have t-hus shown thc nature, construction, and advantage .of this inventiomnso as to enable others skilled to make and 'use the saine therefrom.
I cla-im as'a new article of mannfacture- `The combination of thel case and pin' B B', spring and ratchet-reel L F, pawl and tape M H, cr their mechanical equivalents,-for fastening eye-glasses toa garment, substantially as described.
