HORATI'O O. PERRY, 0F BUFF.AL,NEW YORK.
Letters.Patent No. 79,385, dated June `30, 1868; anteated Jun-e 16, 1868.
IMPROVEMENI' IN FEEDi- WATER HBATBRS FOB. BOILERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A Be it known that I, HORATI O. PERRY, cf the city of Bulfalo, in` til county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-*Water Reaters for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, rr .rence being had'tothc accompanying drawings, in whichl` I Figure 1 is a-side view of a portion of a boiler partially in section, showing the arrangement of my improved heater. l
Figure 2 is a vertical section ofthe heater detached.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in beth igure.
The invention'consists in the construction and `arrangement ot' ya feed-water heater within the smoke-box or chimney of a steam-boiler, substantiallyA as hereafter described. l
I In the drawings, A represents the smokefbox,]3 the chimney or smoke-stack extending therefrom; C is the heater, arranged abovcthe ues in the smoke-box and chimney.
The heater consists of a cylindrical or slightly-conical vessel placed upright, with avertical ilue or opening, D, passing through its centre. The shell or outer caser-e is made with its sides outwardly diver-ging towards the top, whilethe inner case or flue-is 'made to converge, as shown in liig. 2, leaving between the two an annular Water-space, F. Cold water is introduced into this space near the bottom, through a suitable pipe, g, which enters from the outside.
II is the feed-pipe near the top, through which the water, after it has become heated, is forced by the feedpump into the boiler. I is a steam-pipe, which conveys the steam generated in the heater to the steam-dome. The inclined or diverging and converging sides respectively of the'case and due of the heater cause more of the heated products of combustion to come in contact therewith, than wouldif they were vertical, with 'the draught ascendingparallel along its sides. They also serveI to slightly retard the passage of the heated products, which enables more ofthe heat'to be absorbed.
The great advantages of myimproved arrangement are obvious.
` .It utilizes the products of combustion'aftersthey have performed their ofiice of generating steam in thc I boiler, and which would otherwise escape and be wasted. v
In many arrangements the heater abstracts heat that would otherwise be employed in generating steam, by which there'is lost in one direction what is gained in the other, whereas by my improved arrangement I am enabled to--attain all the beneficial results of a heater, without any ofthe prejudicial consequences that usually attend its use.
The heater is also simple in its construction, and of a nature best calculated to accomplish the desired' purpose. It can be easily applied to any ordinary boiler, and at-but a trifling expense.-
What IY claim as my invention, is- The heater C, constructed and arranged within the smoke-box and chimney, substantially as shown and described. y
In witness whereof, I have'hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IIORATIO O. PERRY.
