yRe it known that we, FRANK R. McBnn'rY, of Evanston, Cook county, Illinois, and JAM ns L. MCQUARRIE, of South Orange, Essex 5 county, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Service-Meters, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
Our invention relates to magnetically-operated service-meters, and has for its object to provide an improved construction whereby it will be possible when desired to rebate or cancel a registration already effected.
Ve will describe our invention particularly I5 by reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment thereof, and the features or combinations which we consider novel will be pointed out in the appended claims.
2O Figure l is a plan view of a service-meter constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing an alternative position of the parts.
The same letters of reference are used to designate the same parts wherever they are shown.
The U-shaped bar which supports the magnet-cores c c and the centrally-pivoted armature (Z, is permanently magnetized in such a way that the ends thereof shown at the left will represent one pole, while the rear end or yoke of the U will present the opposite pole. The cores c c are of soft iron, and both are mounted upon the base or yoke piece and derive their polarity therefrom. The magnetcoils e e of the cores c c are wound to produce ortend to produce poles of diderent sign, so that a polarized magnet is thus constructed,
` such that when the magnet-coils are traversed by current of one polarity the centrally-pivoted armature will be tilted, as shown in Fig. 3, while current of opposite polarity will cause the armature to be tilted in the opposite direction, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The counting-train c is provided with a ratchet-wheel c', which is adapted to be engaged by either of the two pawlsfj. The pawl f is connected to the armature (Z above the pivotal axis d thereof; but the pawlf" is connected to said armature below said pivotal axis. Springs f/f/ tend to hold the pawls ff in engagement with the teeth of the ratchetwheel c; but when either pawl is moved toward the magnet-pole by the attraction of the armature the end of the other pawl is moved out of yengagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, such movement being produced by a cam-surface f2 of the pawl riding up upon a pin f3, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. When the armature l is tilted in a clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 3, the counting-train is thus rotated one step to effect a registration, and the armature may then be returned, through the agency of springs g g, to its normal central position ready to make another registration; but if now the armature be tilted in a contra-clockwise direction the ratchet-wheel c will be reversely actuated, moving back the counting-train, and so coun- 7o teracting or nullifying the previous registration.

IVe claim- 1. A service-meter comprising a countingwheel, a pawl adapted to turn the countingwheel in one direction, another pawl adapted to turn the wheel in the opposite direction, 8c and electromagnetic mechanism adapted to actuate either of said pawls.
2. A service-meter comprising a countingwheel, a polarized magnet, an armature for said magnet normally maintained in a neutral 8 5 position, and mechanism operated by the movement of said armature adapted to turn the counting-Wheel forward or backward, according to the direction of movement of said armature, substantially as set forth. 9o
3. A service-meter comprising a counting- Wheel, a pawl adapted to turn said wheel in one direction, another pawl adapted to turn said wheel in an opposite direction .a magnet and an armature therefor controlling the movement of said pawls.
4. A service-meter comprising a countingtrain, a ratchet-wheel connected thereto, apolarized magnet, a centrally-pivoted armature for said magnet, a pawl pivoted to said armature at one side of its axis and adapted to engage said ratchet-wheel to move the countingtrain in one direction, and a second pawl pivoted to said armature at the other side of its axis adapted to engage said ratchet-wheel and move the counting-train in the opposite direction.
5. A service-meter comprising a polarized' magnet a counting-train having a ratchetwheel for actuating the same a centrally-pivoted oscillating armature for said electromagnet, means for normally maintaining the same in a central position, two pawls connected with said armature on either side of the axis thereof, and engaging said ratchet-wheel on each side of its axis, and means adapted when either pawl is moved in one direction, to guide the same away from said ratchet-wheel.
6. A service-meter comprising a polarized electromagnet, a counting train having a ratchet-wheel for actuating the same, a centrally-pivoted oscillating armature for said electromagnet, a spring g normally maintainingthe same in a central position, two pawls connected with said armature on either side oi' the axis thereof and engaging said ratchetwheel on each side of its axis, a cam-surface f2 for each of said pawls, and pins]3 adapted, when either pawl is given a movement to actuate said ratchet-wheel, to engage said camsurface and guide the other pawl away from the ratchet-wheel.
