Description

No. 798,528. PATENTED JUNE 27, 1905 H. KIRGH.
ALARM INDICATOR.
AI PLIUATION FILED 513F127. 1904.
Witwaawo Patented June 27, 1905.
ATEN'r HENRY KIROH, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
ALARM-INDICATOR- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 793,528, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed September 2'7, 1904:. Serial No. 226,220.
To (all mil/0171, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Kmorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm-Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to indicators for baling-presses and other machines in which it is desired to have an alarm sounded at the end of a predetermined number of strokes of the plunger, &c., and has for its object the provision of an indicator that is simple in construction. efficient in operation, and reasonable in cost of manufacture.
The construction of my invention will be explained in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows my improved indicator se-r cured to the casing of a hay-press.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the outer casing of a press havingaslot B therein, in which travels an eXtensionC on the plunger. (Not shown.)
My indicator is secured to easing A and consists of a bell D, a U-shaped lever E, to which is attached a rod F for operating the bell-clapper. (Not shown.) U-shaped lever E is fulcrumed on bolt a, secured to casing A, and is normally held in an inoperative position by means of a spring G, secured to one of the arms H of said lever E, the other arm I being relatively longer than arm H and adapted to be operated by means of a ratchetwheel J, having pins K to engage said arm I and depress it against the resilience of said spring G. Ratchet-wheel J is operated by means of a lever L, pivoted on casing A, and has an arm M pivotally secured thereto, which in its normal position rests over the slot B, said arm being adjustable by means of screwbolt N, mounted in cars a on lever L and arm M.
0 represents the operating-pawl pivotally secured on the end of lever L and having its free end in engagement with the teeth 7' on the periphery of ratchet-Wheel J, P representing a spring to hold the pawl O in engagement with the teeth 7'.
0 represents a spring-pawl to engage the teeth 7' and prevent backward movement of the ratchet J,and R a spring that engages pins K to stiffen the action of the ratchet-wheel.
In operation the extension G at each stroke of the plunger pushes to one side the arm M, which raises lever L and causes pawl ()to turn ratchet-wheel J the distance of one of the teeth 7'. As the wheel J turns, one of the pins K engages the arm I of lever E, and when a predetermined number of strokes of the plunger has been made the pin slides off of the arm I and the spring G pulls the lever back to its original position, which causes the rod F to operate the clapper of bell D.
S represents a stop to limit the return movement of lever E, and T a stop to limit the downward movement of lever L.'
I have shown my invention applied to a press having a vertically-operating plunger,so that lever L is returned to its normal position by gravity; but my invention is applicable to presses having a horizontal plunger, in which case a spring may be secured to lever L and easing A to return it to its normal position after each stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An alarm-indicator comprising a bell, a U- shaped lever having a long and a short arm, said lever bcing'fulcrumed opposite said short arm, a coil-spring having one end suitably secured and the other end attached to the short arm of the lever, a bell-clapper secured to the lever, a ratchet-wheel suitably journaled, pins on said ratchet-wheel to successively engage the long arm of the lever, a lever suitably fulcrumed, a spring-controlled pawl secured to said lever and adapted to engage the teeth of said ratchet-wheel, an arm secured to said lever, and a rod secured to the lever and to the arm and provided with means to adjust the position of said arm relative to the lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
