ATTORNEYS NITED STATES Patented June 27, 1905.
PATENT Carica.
TOY BUREAU.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,422, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed January 6, 1905. Serial No. 239,848.
To all whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, A'rHuR'roND. CONVERSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W inchcndon, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Toy Bureau, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of toy bureau whereby the mirror and its frame may be placed for shipment or storage in a compartment at the back of the body of the bureau and held in a protected position, the top of the body of the bureau being at such time flush throughout, and to so locate the said compartment that whenv the mirror is stored therein it will not interfere with the action of the drawers.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a construction whereby the same means employed for holding the mirror in the storage-compartment in the body is utilized for securing the mirror and its frame in a suitable exposed position on the body.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mirror viewed from the rear, the mirror being mounted upon the body. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section through the body of the bureau, the mirror, and its frame, the latter two elements being shown protected within the body; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the Lipper rear portion of the bureau and mounting for the bureau, the mirror being in the position shown in Fig. 1, illustrating the application of the fastening device.
A represents the body of the bureau provided with any desired number of drawers 10,Which, however, do not extend t6 the backboard 11 of the body, producing, therefore, a back chamber 12, extending from the top to the bottom of the body, being open at such points,
and in the construction of the top or dresser board 13 of the body of the bureau such top board extends only to the front portion of the said' chamber 12 at its top, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The frame 14 for the mirror 15 is secured to the base-board 16, which is of the same thickness and length as the top or dresser board 13 of the body and which is adapted to cover the top of the chamber 12. At the central portion of the base-board 16 an opening 17 is produced, having enlarged sections 17 17b at its ends, as is also shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and a corresponding but smaller aperture 18 is made in the rear edge portion of the dresser or top board 13.
When the article is to be shipped or stored, the frame 14 of the mirror 15 is passed downward into the back or storage chamber 12 in the body of the bureau until its base-board 16 rests upon the upper structure on said body, completing the formation of the top or dresser board 13, as is shown in Fig. 2, and then a l screw 19 is passed through the opening 17 in the base-board and is screwed into the smaller aperture 18 in the top or dresser board until the head of the screw is concealed in the enlargement 17 of the opening' 17 Under this arrangement of the parts it will be observed that the drawers may be freely operated and that the top of the body of the bureau is ush throughout.
When the bureau is to be used, the screw 19 is removed and the mirror-frame and mirror are withdrawn from the chamber 12 in the body and are placed in an upright position, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the base-board 16 of the mirrow-frame again covering the top of the back or storage chamber 12, and finally the screw 19 is again made to enter the opening 17 and aperture 18 to secure the pieces of the mirror-frame to the body of the bureau, the head of the screw being concealed in the enlargement 17 of the opening 17.
Although I have described the invention as especially applicable to toy bureaus, it is to be understood it is equally applicable to commercial bureaus and kindred articles of furniture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A bureau or similar article of furniture, having a chamber at the rear of its drawers, a mirror-frame adapted to enter said chamber in an inverted position, and a base for the said mirror-frame, which base serves as ka cover for the upper portion of said chamber.
` 2. A bureau or similar article of furniture having a chamber at the rear of its drawers, a mirror-frame adapted to enter said chamber in an inverted position, a base-plate for the mirror-frame and which covers the top of said chamber in both the upright and the inverted positions of the mirror-frame, and a locking device for securing the mirror-frame` to the body of the bureau in either position of the mirror. l
3. In a bureau or a like article of manufacture, a body provided with a storage-chamber, l a mirror'or other vframe adapted to enter said ture, a body provided with a storage-chamber, a mirror-frame'adapted to enter saidchamber, a basefor the "frame, serving as a cover for the chamber and a continuation of the top of the body, and means for securing the said base to the vsaid body.
5. In a bureau or a like article of Vmanufacture, a'bodyprovided with a storage-chamber, a mirror or other frame adapted to enter said chamber, a base for the frame, serving as a cover for' the chamber, the base being provided with an opening having an enlarged outer section and adapted 'to register with a corresponding opening inthe top of the body,
and a screw adapted to pass through the open-
