SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,383, dated June 27, 1905.

Be it known that I, JAMES B. LADD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Finishing Cylinders or Tubes of Pulp, Paper, or Similar Material and Removing Moisture from the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is the production of a machine in which a cylinder or tube of pulp, paper, or similar material may in the wet condition be expanded to the finished size and condition and the moisture extracted therefrom. Speaking generally, I accomplish this object by a novel method and the use of a centrifugal machine of novel construction, in which the basket or perforated inner easing is in the shape of the desired finished article, having, if desired, an inner contour adapted to form depressions or elevations in the cylinder. This basket is also made in sections, so that it may be separated to receive and deliver the pulp cylinder or tube. This inner perforated basket is held in place by an outer casing and is secured to a revoluble base.
I will first describe the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then point out the invention in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the inside casing. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line A B. Fig. 3 is a portion of the inside casing, showing the perforations for the ejection of moisture. Fig. 4t is a side elevation of the complete machine. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of same.
N is a perforated basket or inner easing. This is formed of a plurality of sections, three in number, a a a?, being shown in the drawings, although this number may be varied. The sections a and n are secured to the section n2 by means of the hinges wf and 71T. I
Each of these sections of the basket is provided with perforations a7 throughout their height. Projecting' from each one of these sections are the flanges or lugs n", which decrease in length from the bottom to the top of each section. The perforated section a2 is secured to the revoluble base B by means of bolts I, passing through the lower flanges a.
The flanges a are also provided with orifices ns, so as to provide free passage for the liquid, which passes out through the perforations nf.
D is a fixed base, which is hollow and having the outlet (Z. within this pocketed or hollow base D.
A is the outer section of the machine, which is slipped over the sections of the perforated basket after the sections have been put in place, secured together, and secured to the base. This outer section or casing contacts with the top of the basket and with the flanges a, and its lower end projects into the pocket of the base D.
If it is desired to groove or flute the tube 7 0 or cylinder treated, rings M, having the projections m, are securely fastened to the interior surface of the basket N.
The base B is rotated in the following manv ner: The base B is securely fastened to one end of the shaft D. This shaft is rotated by means of a belt, (not shown,) which is driven from a suitable source of power. (Not shown.) The belt passes over the idlers L and b3 and pulley E, which is secured to said 8O shaft, the shaft being mounted in bearings a a2, in which it is free to revolve.
In order to insert the cylinder to be treated, the sections a and n are swung into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. l. inder F to be treated is placed in position, and the sections a and n closed upon this cylinder. The outer casing A is then slipped or forced over the basket, the basket secured to the base B, and the base B rotated. cause the cylinder to expand against the walls of the basket, and the moisture will be forced through the orifices in the basket and pass outward through the outlet al.

In Fig. 2 is shown the cylinder F after the action of the machine. In order to remove the cylinder, it is only necessary to remove the outer casing A, swing these sections free, as shown in the dotted position, Fig. 1, and remove the cylinder.
I do not claim herein the process carried out in this machine, as said process is not my invention.
AHaving noW fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a centrifugal machine of the character described in combination, a sectional perforated basket provided with projecting flanges, the flanges projecting to increasing distances in the height of the basket, an outer casing having an inclined Wall surrounding and contacting With said lianges, means to secure said sections together, a rotatable shaft, and means to connect said basket and shaft.
2. In a centrifugal machine of the character described, in combination, a sectional perforated basket, provided With projecting flanges on their outer surfaces, an inclosing casing contacting with the upper surface of said basket and said fianges, means to'secure said sections together, a rotatable shaft, and connection between said basket and shaft.
3. In a centrifugal machine of the character described, in combination, a sectional perforated basket provided with projecting flanges, the flanges projecting to increasing distances in the height of the basket, an outer casing having an inclined Wall surrounding and contacting With the upper surface of said basket and said flanges, means to secure said sections together, a rotatable shaft, and means to connect said basket and shaft.
