PENDULUM-SECURING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,136, dated June 27, 1905.

To all whmn/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMERON M. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendulum-Securing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pendulunntimepieces. Heretofore in this class of timepieces it has been customary to remove the pendulum when the clock is packed for shipment or is to be transported in any manner. This occasions a vexatious loss of time and requires considerable ingenuity in replacing the pendulum and adjusting the same to proper length.
Primarily the object of my invention is the provision of means for securing the pendulum against displacement, said means being inserted through an opening of the dial and engaging a part of the pendulum, as will be hereinafter explained.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a resilient device inserted through an opening in the dial and serving to engage a part of the pendulum to lock it against movement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partially broken away, of sufficient parts of a timepiece to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one form of a pendulum-securing device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the device illustrated in Fig. 2 in position in one of the keyholes of the dial, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a different form of securing device which may be employed.
Like numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the plates of the frame 6, the dial; 7, the pallet; 8, the pallet-arbor 9, the pendulum carried by said arbor, and 10 a yoke constituting a art of said pendulum in the construction s own, although this form of pendulum may be replaced by other forms, if desired.
Designated by 12 and 13 are usual keyholes of the dial, and by 14 is another opening in said dial for a purpose hereinafter described.
Any desired device adapted to be fitted in one of the holes 12, 13, or 14 of the dial and to engage either the yoke 10 or a part of another form of pendulum may be employed for securing the pendulum against movement; but for accomplishing this result two implements are shown. In Fig. 2 an elongated U-shaped spring 15 is illustrated, and this pin is inserted in the opening 13, and one leg of said pin is passed over the side bar of the yoke 10 and serves by its resiliency to press said arm against the Windingarbor 16 and to lock the pendulum in the position illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. As will be obvious, the pin 15 may be inserted in the keyhole 12 to accomplish the same result on the other side bar of the yoke, or it may be inserted in the opening 14, if desired. As substitutes for the two-armed resilient pin 15 any suitable device may be employed, and in Fig. 4 a spring-pin 17 is illustrated, said pin being of the usual split type and serving to straddle the part 18 of the pendulum to which it is applied and to lock said pendulum. against motion. A more positive lock is, however, effected by forcing the side bar of the yoke against one of the winding-arbors, as shown in. Fig. 1.
My invention is not limited to the precise devices shown and described, for, as stated, changes may be made Without departure therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a pendulum, of a dial having an opening, and a device inserted through said opening and serving to lock the pendulum against movement.
2. The combination, with a pendulum, of a dial having an opening for the reception of an arbor, said arbor; and a device inserted in said opening, and serving to lock the pendulum against the arbor.
3. The combination, with a dial having an opening, of a pendulum, and a resilient device inserted in said opening, and engaging said opening, and serving to bind a part of IO the pendulum. the yoke against the arbor.
