MOLD FOR MAKING CONCRETE TIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,055, dated June 27, 1905.

Application led March 14,1904. Serial No. 197,968.

Be it known that l, HENRY H. CLoUcn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elyria, Lorain county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Making Concrete Ties, of which the following is a complete specification.

This invention relates to molds, and relates particularly to molds for making concrete railway-ties.

A primary ob ect of the invention is to provide means for removing a concrete tie or other article from its mold before it has thoroughlyset or hardened and transferring it to any desired place, where it is allowed to remain until it becomes thoroughly set or hardened.

To this end a mold of my invention consists of the various features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings a mold of my invention is fully illustrated.

A mold of my invention consists of a suitable receptacle the interior of which is the shape of the article to be formed therein--in the present instance of the desired shape of a railway-tie. The top of said mold is open l and the walls l thereof are upwardly and outwardly flared to provide necessary draft for removing a tie or other article therefrom. As shown, also, said walls l are formed intei gral with a base 2, which forms a support for the mold. i

To effect the object of the invention as it relates to the removal of the tie or other article from the mold before the same is thorl oughly set or hardened, the bottom 3 0f the mold is made removable, a suitable shoulder e being formed on said mold, upon which the bottom 3 rests when said mold is assembled for use.

In using the mold the bottom 3 is first placed therein. The mold is then filled with concrete, which is thoroughly compacted therein and allowed to set for a short time, after which the tie or other article is removed from said mold and transferred to any desired place, where it is allowed to remain until it becomes thoroughly set or hardened.

The removal of the tie from the mold without injury is elfected by removing it, together with the bottom of the mold, which forms a rigid support for conveniently handling thc tie, without danger of breaking the same.

As it will require considerably more time for a tie to set or harden than it does to form a tie7 a number of bottoms are provided with each mold, thus making provision for using the mold continuously without waiting for each tie to set or harden as it is fo1'med,which would obviously be a very slow process.

Any desired or approved means may be employed for removing the bot-toms 3 from the molds. As shown, the removal of the ties from the molds is effected by means of hooks 5, which are adapted to engage rigid portions of the bottom 3 of the mold, on opposite sides thereof. As shown, the hooks 5 are pivoted to a bar 6, supported above the mold by suitable means, (not shown,) there being two such hooks designed to engage the bottom I3 of the mold on one side at consider'- able distances from each other and a single hook designed to engage said mold on its oppositeside between the other two. As shown, said hooks are adapted to extend downwardly outside of the walls of the mold and to be inserted through openings 7, formed in the base 2 of the mold, into engagement with rigid portions of the mold-bottom 3. To prevent accidental disengagement of the hooks 5 from the bottom 3 of the mold 1n handling, means are provided to effect a secure engagetively to the stationary body portion of the mold, the side walls 1 of the mold comprise removable sections 11 directly above the opening 7 in the base of the mold, through which the hooks 5 are inserted into engagement with the mold-bottom 3. As shown, the removable sections 11 of the mold-walls taper downwardly, thus providing for easily withdrawing the same from their seats in said mold. In the preferable construction shown the hooks 5 are so proportioned that when the ends thereof are in proper engagement with the bottom of said mold the sides or shanks of said hooks will be in contact with the upper ends of the removable wall-sections 11. vWith this construction it is obvious that tipping of the tie in handling the same on the mold-bottom 8 will be efectually prevented. After the ties have been deposited in desired position and the hooks 5 disengaged the pieces 11 may be readily removed from the side of the tie, even if theydo not fall off of their own weight.

Y In Fig. 4 of the drawings a tie 12 is shown in process of being removed from the mold, the tie shown being of the type shown and described in an application for United States Letters Patent filed byme in the Patent Oflice concurrently herewith and numbered serially 197,964, to which reference is made for a detailed description thereof. The tie shown comprises projections on the top surface thereof, to receive which suitable openings 14 are provided in the mold-bottoms 3. This feature, however, is entirely immaterial, as molds of my invention are equally adapted for forming other forms of concrete ties as well as other articles.

The bar 6, on which the hooks 5 are supported, has a ring or eye 16 secured thereto, by which it is adapted to be connected to a crane or other suitable hoist. (Not shown.)

I claim as my invention- 1. A mold, the bottom of which is removable with the contents thereof, said bottom forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the mold-bottom comprising hooks adapted to engage rigid portions thereof, and the walls of the mold comprising removable Sections to provide openings for the passage of said hooks in removing the mold-bottom, substantially as described.

2. A mold, the bottomV of which -is removable with the contents thereof, said bottom forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the mold-bottom, comprising hooks, ribs on the under side of the mold-bottom adapted to be engaged by said hooks, and the walls of the same comprising removable sections to provide openings for the passage of said hooks in removing the mold-bottom, substantially as described.

3. A mold, the bottom of which is removable with the contents thereof, said bottom forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the mold-bottom, comprising pivoted hooks adapted to engage rigid portions thereof, and the walls of the mold comprising removable sections to provide openings for the passage of said hooks in removing the moldbottom, substantially as described.

4. A mold, the bottom of which is removable with the contents thereof, said bottom forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the moldbottom comprising hooks adapted to engage rigid portions thereof, and the walls of the mold comprising removable sections to provide openings for the passage of said hooks in removing the mold-bottom, the relation being such that when said hooks are in engagement with the mold-bottom, the sides thereof will be in contact with the up er ends of the removable sections of the wa ls of said molds, substantially as described.

5. A mold, the bottom of which is removable with the contents thereof, said bottom forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the mold-bottom comprising hooks, and inclined surfaces on the under side of the mold-bottom adapted to be engaged thereby and the walls of the mold comprising removable sections to provide an opening for the passage of said hooks in removing the moldbottom, the relation being such that when the hooks are in engagement with the inclined surfaces on the mold-bottom, the sides of said hooks will be in contact with the upper ends of the removable sections of the walls of the mold, substantially as described.

6. A mold, the bottom of which is removable with the contents thereof, said mold forming a support for the contents of the mold in removing the same, means for removing the mold -bottom comprising pivoted hooks, and inclined surfaces on the under side of the mold-bottom adapted to be engaged by said hooks and the walls of the mold comprising removable sections to pro- IIO vide openings for the passage of said hooks in removing the mold-bottom, the relation being snob that when said hooks are in engagenient with the inclined surfaces on said nioidbottom, the sides of said hooks will be in contact with the removable sections of the walls of the nioid adjacent to their upper ends, substantially as described.
