Description

@man feas @eine snes,
.HENRY E. SHAW, 0E WEST noXBUEY, Assieme To JAMES A. Wooonnnr' 'AND s cLoMoNs. GRAY, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Latem Parmi No. 79,263, dared June 23, 186e.
IMPROVEMENT in s TEEnnio-Arrsmi'iUs.A
setts, have invented a new and'nseful Improvement in Steering-Apparatus, of which the i'ollowingis o full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making la part of this speciiication, in".vhich-` ,Y v 1 Figure l represents o. perspective view of an apparatus embodying my invention.
Figure 2 isa view of thc operating-gears. l
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectionof a portion o f iig. 1'.
Figure is 'a modification of the mode of operating the apparatus. I
The nature of my invention, consists iu the employment, in a steering-appa ratus, of a differential gear, operating in connection with an eccentric-shaft, ono of the gears being held, end tho, shaft ,being made to rotate, so that the other or uneonined gear will have a motion around its own centre, imparting a corresponding motionto the rudder-,post and rudder, whereby the latter may bo rcadiiy turned inV any direction, and will remain in any set position, without being held` by the capstan, or secured in anyother manner, regardless of any force brought to bear upon *the rudder or rudder-post belowthe operative-gears.
Referring to the drawing-s, A represents the deck of a `'essel, on which is-placed a platform, B. C is the rudder-post, to the upper end of which is attached a metal frame, D. Forming a part of this frame is o cylin. der, D', having a spur-gear cut-upon its external surface. E is 'a cylinder, with a spur-gear uponits internal i surface, as seen in lig. 2, and is attached to or forms a part of a frame or arm, E, extending to thcreor, where' it is attached to a chain or rod, It, secured to posts l l or, o ther suitable xtnres. By this means the internal spur-gear is allowed a limited oscillating motion, without rotating. To the.ends of `the chains or rods k, which' .are fastened to the arm of the gear E, are attachod'springs or somo elastic material, t', for the pnrposeof avoiding any unusual strain upon the gears and rudde'rpost, which may be occasioned by the action of the water upon the rudder. -To thc top of the rudder-post C is attached a spindle, H, to which is secured the sleeve G, provided at its lower end with an eccentric portion, g, tti'ng within the central opening of the internal gear E, andeby. which the oscillating movement of the latter is effected. I is the wheel by which the rudder is operated. W
represents a wheel, by which the rudder can bo operatedby rneansfof chains or rods c, extending to any part of the vessel. I
Bc it known that I, HENRYAF. S'IIAW, of West Roxbury, in the' county of-Norfolk, and Stato of Molssachu- By this construction of a steering-apparatus, the rudder may be very r'adihyiturned in either direction, and will be iirmly held 'in any position, without the-necessity ot' holding en y tothe whcel`,or any other .retainingdevices, regardless of any farce that may be brought to be'ar upon the rudderot post below the operative parte,I thus avoiding accidents, so liable to occur to thc man' at the wheel, in a rough 'son'. A
In iig. 4, which'is a modification oitlio apparatus, tlio wheel W is attchcd to a shaft passing through the sleeve L', on the other end of which shaft is a bevel-gear, which engages with a corresponding bevel-gear attached v to the eccentric-sleeve, that operates the external gear E', afs vshown in iig. 3. i i
The sleeve L' forms a part of a rigid frame, L, supported by the. spindle en tlie' rudder-post, and, extend-l ing to thercar, is provided, at its ond, with a slot, through' which works the pin onthe end of tho plntolE, and by which the same is supported 'in connection with the reds k. i By this construction a greater s teadiness is insnrcdto the. operative.popticns'othe apparatus. ,l The motion and positionof the. rudder may beindicatcd by means of a pointer, non the rudder-post and' an index-plate.
The internal gear E may be made to rotate, and the external gear D to oscillatc,linstead of operatingjas' herein specified, if desirable. l What I claimias my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination, with the rudder-post C, of the sleeve G, provided with the eccentric, g, and the gears and E, substantially as and for the purpo'se specied. e c v I The combination of -a spring with the arm of th'c oscillatingge'ar E, substantially.- as and for tho purpose specied. I I y In testimonywhcroof, 'l have signed my name to this specification in tho presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
