SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 792,535, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed September 26, 1904. Serial No. 225,995.
Be it known that I, HERRMAN MoLnNDo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Boiler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to boilers; and its principal object is to save a great portion of the heat lost by conduction through the walls of a brick setting as ordinarily employed. It is well known that when the hot gases and flames in a boiler-furnace strike the rear wall of a brick setting a lot of heat is lost by conduction through said rear wall, decreasing the evaporative efficiency of the boiler. Also the hot flames striking the rear wall soon destroys the latter, as well as the lintel that is employed to support the roof of the setting between the body of the boiler and the rear wall. Many repairs are required by reason of the destruction of the rear wall and said lintel, and the present invention obviates the same.
The organization of the invention comprises the combination of a tubular boiler and a rear leg attached thereto, the latter taking the place of the rear wall of a brick setting.
Figure 1 shows a vertical axial section of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial rear end view of Fig. 1.
The body or cylindrical shell of a boiler is shown at A with the fire-tubes B, grate C, combustion chamber C, steam dome D, muddrum E, connecting with the shell of the boiler by the pipe 0, feed-pipe F, stack Gr, furnacedoor H, hand-holes I, blow-off pipes J, and rear leg K.
The leg K is connected to the rear end of the boiler by the throat connection L. A circulating-pipe M runs from the bottom of the shell of the body A at the rear end thereof and connects with the cross-pipe M, which latter joins with pipes M that each connect with the rear leg of the boiler. In the said rear leg there is found an opening in thelower portion thereof, thereby securing means of access to the combustion-chamber O, which has attached to it the door 0, and an asbestos covering is provided for the body of the boiler and the outer face of the rear leg.
l/Vhen using the boiler, the flames and products of combustion pass to the rear and directly impinge against an inner face K of the water-leg K, after which they rise, strike the plate I of the throat connection L, and enter the fire-tubes B on their way up the stack G. The piping M M M secures proper circulation between the body of the boiler and the said rear leg K.
Having described my invention, 1 claim 1. The combination with a horizontal tubular boiler, of a rear leg extending therefrom, the said leg having an opening for securing access to the combustion-chamber of the boiler, a door over said opening, a pipe extending from the body of the boiler, a cross-pipe M connected with said pipe, and pipes connecting said cross-pipe and the rear leg.
2. The combination with a boiler, of a rear leg extending therefrom, the said rear leg having an opening leading to the combustionchamber of the boiler,a door over said opening, circulating-pipes connecting said rear leg with the body of the boiler, a mud-drum in the combustion-chamber, and a pipe connecting said drum with the shell of the boiler.
3. The combination with a horizontal tubular boiler, of a rear leg extending therefrom, the said rear leg having an opening leading to the combustion-chamber of the boiler, a door over said opening, circulating-pipes connecting said rear leg with the body of the boiler, a steam-dome extending from the boiler, a mud-drum in the combustion-chamber, and a pipe connecting said drum with the shell of the boiler.

Y., for an improvement in a Boiler, was erroneously issued to Theodore Smith 8; Sons Co. as owner 01" the entire interest in said invention; that said Letters Patent should have been issued to the inventor Herrman Molendo and Theodore Smith & Sons 00., jointly, said Theodore Smith St Sons 00. being the assignee of one-half interest only in said patent, as shown by the record of assignment in this ofiice; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
