IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

Beit known that I, CHARLES P. GoRELY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Letter-Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull and correct description of thesame, reference being had to-tho accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a door-jamb having my improved letter-box applied, the operative mechanism being shown in side'elevation,

This invention 'is an improvement on a letter-box invented by me, for which Letters Patent were issued, December 17, 1867; and it consists of a more simple device for connecting the lid or cover with the bell-wire. by the use of a series of pivoted hars, which serve not only to ring the bell,"when the lid is opened, without interfering with the operation of the ordinary heil-pull, but operate to hold the lid {irnily'open when raised to .the proper height, and to keep it securely closed when shut, all as hereinafter more fully set forth. v

".To enable others to makel use of my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of my improved letter-box, referring to the drawing, whercon A marks the framing of an ordinary door-jainb, in which is cut a. vertical slot or opening, J, of the usual and proper size for thereception of letters, papers, and ordinary mail-matter. A lid, B, is made to cover the slot, and is hinged at a to the door-jamb. -This is opened by means of a knob, b. A small bracket, C, is attached to the inner side of the lid B,'and to this is pivoted a rod, D, the other end of which is attached by a chaise-top joint, d, to a link, E, connected by a similarjoint, e, to the short bar F, which is pivoted atfto a bracket iixed tothe inside ofthe door-jamb. `The pivot c is con nected by wire and chain Gr to the spring S, which operates the door-bell, and this spring tend'slto draw the bar F downwards towards the pin P, to which the spring is attached. Chain H and wire w connect the bell-spring S with the ordinary bell-pull of the house-door, in the usual way. A

The operation is as follows Then the lid B is closed, the Various parts occupy the relative positions represented in black lines in the drawing. The position of the parts, when the lid is fully open, is represented in red lines. As the lidBis raised, the spring S continues to resist the rise of the arm F, until that arm has passed in front of aline drawn from P through the pivotf. When it has passed forward of that line, the spring tends to draw it down n front of that line, but the chaise-top joints are, in that position, brought to their bearings, and unite the three bars D, E, F, so as to form a rigid connection between the pivotsf and c, thus firmly supporting the lid B in the'elevatcd position shown in red lines in the drawing. When the lid B is depressed far enough toallow the arm F to pass back of the line Pf, before mentioned, the spring S draws down the arm F, and forcibly and securely holds the lid B in' the closed position. The introduction ofthe chains G Hin -the line of the bell-wires, in the manner shown, allows the spring S, and its attached bell, to be operated either by the ordinary bell-pull or by the lid B, without anyA interference between the two sources of motion.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination and arrangement of the lid B, bars D, E, F, wire or chain G, and spring vS, all constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.

. 2. The introduction of the chains II and G into the length of the bell-wires, for the purpose of allowing either of two modes specified to bc used in ringing the bell, without interfering with the other, as set'forth.
