Description

V S. 'J. BATCHELDER. Lamp Extinguisher.
guitar .gtatrs jigs tent @ffin Letters Patent No. 79,187, dated June 23, 1 868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMB-'EXTINGUISHERS.
iiilge 5:11am: Itittl'th it ill that Etetiers. fitttnt tut tinting-tart at it: time TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, STEHHEN JJBATCHELDER, of Manchester, in the county of Hilisbcio, and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Lamp-Extinguisher; and I do'hereby declare that the following is atfu-ll, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan orinside view of this invention.

7 This invention relates to a burner used for kerosene or o'th er light hydrocarbon-oils, to which a vapor-tube is attached. a
The invention consists,.first, of a flanged cap or extinguisher, fitting 'closely over the wick and vapor-tubes, when the same are closed second, of a flat spring or band, embracing the wick-tube, which, by its; pressure on thespindle-crank, to which the cap or extinguisher is attached, keeps the cover firmly in its place, when closed over the tubes.
Fig. 1; Letter A represents the flanged cap or extinguisher closed over the wick and vapor-tubes. B represents the spindle-crank; C, theflat spring or band, embracing the wick-tube.
Fig. 2. D, the base o rsupport for the spindle-crank B, which operatesthe cap A, and which is attachedto the wick-tube by means of solder or rivets.
It willhei readily understood that the advantage of turning a flange on the cap or extinguisher is, that when closed over the tubes, it fits more tightly, and its rotation is prevented.
One seriou s objection to the burning of light hydrocarbon-oils for illuminating purposes, especially those in which naphtha enters is the escape-of gases orpvapors after extinguishing the light, and'particularly when lumps containing such compounds are placed in warm situations, such ason the mantel-shelf and elsewhere. This invention-obviates, as will be readily seen, this objection, by preventing the escape of gases and vapor, both from the wick and vapor-tube.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The flanged cap or extinguisher A, so constructed as to cover the wick andvapor-tubes F and G, in combination with the flatspring or band C, embracing the wick-tube F, and operating in connection with the spindle-crank B. p
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 3d day of December, 1867.
\ STEPHEN J. BATCHELDER.
