Description

No.791,789. Y PATENTEDJUNE6,1905., 0-. s. HUNT.
ROAD SGR-APER.
APPLICATION FILED P1531 7, 1905- I A! rkey Patented June 6, 1905.
PATENT QFFICE.
' ILIFTON S. HUNT, OF MODOC, INDIANA.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 791,789, dated June 6, 1995.
Application filed February 27, 1905. Serial No. 247,576.
To a. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GLIn'roN S. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modoc,
in the county of Randolph, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a road-scraper, and particularly to a construction to prevent the lateral displacement of the frame of the machine due to the diagonal disposition of the scraper-blade.
The invention has for an object to provide the frame at its front portion with a diagonally-disposed scraper-blade and at the rear with a trailer-blade disposed at an angle to the scraperblade, so as to resist displacement of the frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for drawing the scraper and trailer blades toward each other, thus obtaining a deeper grip of the latter and'throwing the weight of the frame thereon. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for adjusting the scraper-blade and retaining it in its adjusted 5 to by a link-joint 0 position for different conditions of use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth, and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures of the drawings.
The letter A designates the platform or frame of the machine, which is suitably supported upon the axle A, provided with wheels A, by which it is supported. Beyond these wheels rearwardly-extending brace-rods A are disposed and connected to the frame at A. These rods are also provided with an angularly-disposed portion A lying in a vertical plane, to which the trailer-blade B is secured.
-At the front of the frame a scraper-blade C,
ofany desired material, is disposed and is supported by means of a lever C, connected there- This lever is pivotally tion shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thushold the free end of the lever in raised position to retain the scraper-blade in contact with the ground.
Any suitable draft means may be supplied to the machine-for instance, a pole, as shown at C connected by rodsC with the scraperblade to apply the draft directly thereto. The draft is communicated from the blade C to the axle of the machine by means of links D and D, each of which is provided at one end with a collar D to fit upon the axle and at its opposite end with a swivel connection with the scraper-blade of any desired constructionf0r instance, as shown at D. This swivel connection permits a longitudinal inclination of the blade for the purpose of ditching or cleaning ditches already formed, and the blade may beso inclined by means of the operating-lever D, pivotally mounted at D upon the upper end of the standard D", extending from the axle and connected at its outer end D with one end of the scraper-blade, so as to elevate that end when the free end of the lever D is depressed.
For the purpose of drawing the scraper and trailer blades toward each other and thus cause a deeper hold of the latter in the ground, thus restraining the tendency of the frame to a lateral displacement, these blades are connected together by rods B and B connected to any suitable form of lever adapted to produce a simultaneous draft in the same direction upon each of the rods. 1 have shown one form of lever adapted for this purpose comprising the cramp lever B, pivotally mounted at B in a bracket B and adapted to be held at its adjustment by means of the latch 13, engaging the ratchet-segment B upon the upper surface of the platform. It will be obvious that a movement of this lever will produce a strain upon the rods drawing the scraper and trailer blades toward each other, thus forcing the same downward and removing the weight to some extent from the tractionwheels in order to obtain a better and deeper hold upon these blades to resist the lateral displacement caused by the diagonal disposition of the scraper-blade.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a road scraper, a frame supported upon an axle having wheels, a diagonally-disposed scraper-blade at the front of said frame and connected to said axle, and a trailer mounted upon the rear of said frame at an angle to the scraper-blade.
2. In a road-scraper, a frame, a diagonallydisposed scraper-blade at the front thereof, a trailer-blade at the rear of said frame disposed at an angle to the scraper-blade, and means for drawing said blades toward each other.
3. In a road-scraper, a frame, a diagonallydisposed scraper-blade at the front thereof, a trailer-blade at the rear of said frame disposed at an angle to the scraper-blade, means for drawing said blades toward each other, and means for elevating and retaining said scraperblade.
4. In a road-scraper, a frame, a diagonallydisposed scraper-blade at the front thereof, a trailer-blade at the rear of said frame disposed at an angle to the scraper-blade, means for drawing said blades toward each other, means for elevating and retaining said scraper-blade, and means for elevating one end of said scraper-blade.
5. In a road-scraper, a frame, adiagonallydisposed scraper-blade at the front thereof, a trailer-blade at the rear of said frame, a cramplever upon said frame, and connections from said cramp-lever to each of said blades.
6. In a road-scraper, a frame, a diagonallydisposed scraper-blade at the front thereof, a trailer-blade at the rear of said frame, a cramplever upon said frame, connections from said cramp-lever to each of said blades, and means for retaining said lever in its adjusted position.
7 In a road-scraper, a frame, a supportingaxle, traction-wheels for said axle, a scraperblade pivotally mounted at the front of said frame by links extending from said axle, a raising-lever for said blade, and a rack-bar for retaining said lever in position.
8. In a road-scraper, a frame, a supportingaxle and traction-wheels therefor, a scraperblade pivotally mounted at the front of said frame by links extending from said axle, a raising-lever for said blade, a rack-bar for retaining said lever in position, and a pivotal support for the lower end of said rack-bar to permit the same to swing into contact with said lever when its free end is depressed.
9. In a road-scraper, a frame provided with an axle and traction-wheels, a scraper-blade disposed at the front of said frame, links pivotally mounted at one end upon said axle, and a swiveled joint between the opposite end of said links and the scraper-blade.
10. In a road -scraper, a frame provided with an axle and traction-wheels, a scraperblade disposed at the front of said frame, links pivotally mounted at one end upon said axle, a swiveled joint between the opposite end of said links and the scraper-blade, and an operating-lever pivotally supported upon said axle and connected at one end of said blade to elevate the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
