Description

*PATENTBD JUNE 6, 1905.
\ F.R'.DENT0N.
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH. APPLICATION FILED MAR 22 1905 van 152m 7 R. Denim,
UNITED V STATES Patented June 6, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,456, dated June 6, 1905. Application filed March 22, 1905. Serial No. 251,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. DENTON, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Denton, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a specificationsufliciently clear to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in artificial teeth; and its object is, first, the production of an artificial tooth which may be conveniently and effectively fitted and fastened to anatural stump; second, the production of an artificial tooth which may be conveniently and effectively fastened to bridgework; third,
I to strengthen an artificial tooth. These purposes are attained in my invention by certain novel construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an upper central incisor, showing threaded matrix and ramshorn braces in place. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of fastening, showing threaded pin partly inserted in the matrix or bur. Fig. 3 is a front view of an artificial incisor attached to anatural root. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of 'an artificial incisor attached to a natural root.
The tooth may be made of porcelain or other suitable material, into which the matrix and rams-horn braces a, b, and 0 in Fig. 1 have been inserted before baking, care being taken that no part of the matrix or braces extend near the outside of thetooth except at the point where it is to be attached to the stump of tooth or bridgework. The matrix and braces and also the threaded pin or bolt are made of platinum or other suitable material and care taken in baking the tooth not to use excessive heat. The rams-horn braces (b and 0 in Figs. 1 and 2) greatly strengthen the tooth and make its use practical either with or without metallic backing.
In fitting the artificial tooth to a natural stump the top of the stump is prepared in the usual way, and the threaded pin (E and F in Fig. 2) being removed leaves the surface of the artificial tooth without any obstruction to the grinding process. surfaces are matched, the shank of the pin E may be cemented in the stump by the usual process, leaving the threaded portion thereof projecting, to which after the cement has firmly set the artificial tooth or crown may be firmly screwed to place, cement being first introduced in the matrix.
Y In fitting the artificial tooth to bridgework the'bolt may be withdrawn, leaving the point of contact of the tooth with the bridgework free of obstruction, so grinding may readily be done to match or interlock the opposing surfaces, as desired. When satisfactory adjustment is obtained, a hole of the size of the boltis drilled at the desired point in the bridgework, through which the artificial tooth is bolted and interlocked,if desired,to the bridgework, and the head of the bolt is built in and smoothly covered with gold or other suitable protection.
While the description and drawings refer to the application of this invention to an incisor, it is equally applicable to any and all of the other teeth, and while the description of its use may be recommended as given the invention is capable of other and varied practical applications which will suggest themselves to the profession.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I An artificial tooth, or crown containing longitudinally a metallic tube,or matrix,to which, and integral therewith, two metallic wings, or braces are attached, longitudinally, its entire length, in such a position as to be nearest to and as nearly as may be parallel longitudinally with the front of the tooth, the said matrix and wings being embedded and baked within said tooth and coming to thesurface thereof When the opposing only at the point Where the said tooth is to In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name be attached to a natural stump, or to a bridge, to this specification in the presence of two subthe said matrix to be threaded inside to receive scribing Witnesses.
and match threads on the end of a removable FRANK R. DENTON. 5 fastening-pin, or bolt all for the purposes set Witnesses:
forth and substantially as described in the fore- FREDERICK SHEPHERD,
going specification. ROBERT RYAN,
