IMPROVEMENTIN FARM-GATE.
dip Stlgthnlt referrer to fit flgra was than zmt mating part at fl t rams.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN DAVID, of East Enterprise, in the county of Switzerland, and State of Indians, have invented new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; andI do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has for its object a cheap and convenient farm-gate, one not liable to get out of order, and which, by reason of the front stile rising when the bolt is drawn back, avoids all obstruct-ions to its free swing, such as snow-drifts, frozen clods of earth, or the ultimate sagging downwards of the front stile, resulting from the constant strain tendingto that end, so often found in large gates. a
Another important object is to construct the gate so that it may be hoisted vertically to a limited height, so that the smaller domestic animals may pass under without permitting the larger ones to do so.
I Figure 1 is an elevation of the gate, closed. I
Figure 2 is a view of the same, hoisted.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A and A are the gate-posts. In A is cut the mortise or socket, s, for the bolt G. C is the hanging stile,
D'the top rail, and E a double brace. These form a species of crane. The rails, a a a a are hungon wooden pins, 1 2 3 4, which pass through the stile C, said stile being slotted for the admission of the rails. These rails,
.pass through the double brace E, and are hung at their other ends on the pins6 8 9, in the double'front stile C. H is a double strip, pinned to the upper and lower rails, to serve as a guide for thesaid rails, and for the bolt Gr. F is the lever for operating the bolt; it is forked for about two-thirds of its length, and passed over the top rail D. The pin 2' passes through the forks of the lever and the rail a, which forms a fulcrum. Another pin, near the lower end of the lever, attaches it to the'bolt'G. c is a sheave in the crotch of the lever F, and which-rolls on the upper" edge of the top rail, D, to lessen the friction.
When the gate is to be opened, the lever is thrown forward, as in the red lines,.,which draws the bolt from its socket, and, at the same time, lifts the front stile C, and the forward ends of the rails sufiiciently to clear The stile G is hung to the supplementary post B. This post is grooved and slotted for the reception of the screws or 'boltsn a, (see fig. 2,) said screws passihg through the slot 9 in the post B, and firmly screwed into the post A, to serve as guides for the post 13 in its vertical movement, as shown, (fig. 2.) V
This movement is accomplished by means of the circular cam J, provided with the crank-pin d, and attached to the post A by the screw m, or equivalent device; This cam, in revolving, operates against the pin it the gate, as is clearly shown in the figure. I V In the front stile, O, is ahole, 5. When it is desired to keep the forward end o'f the gate raised, the lower portion of the gate isolifted until the said hole comes above the top rail, D, when a suitable pin is inserted, and the gate is held up,vas shown, (red lines, fig. 2.) i
I), in the post B, lifting the said post vertically, and through At t, fig. 2, is one of a series of holes in the post A, for the insertion of check-pins, to keep the cam J in any required position, and consequently the gate at the proper height.
One important feature in this gate is its cheapncss and simplicity of construction. Being made almost entirely of wood, any farmer can construct it for himself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The arrangement ofthe forked lever F and sheave c with the articulation of the said lever on the bar a, by means of which the front stile, O, is lifted simultaneously with the drawing back of the bolt G, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as described.
2. Hoisting the gate by means of the cam J and pine, through the medium of the slotted supplementary post B, and guide-bolts or screws, n n, or' their equivalents, when used substantially in the manner and for the purposes as set forth.
3. The articulated arrangement of the bars a a a a in the stiles Cend C, en the pins, 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9, 'by means of which theforward end of the gate may be lifted, and kept up by a pin inserted in the hole 5, over the upper bar D, in'the manner as specified.
Witness my 'hand, this 6th day of April, 1868.
