ATTACHMENT FOR FINGER-BARS OF IVIOWERS OR HARVESTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,022, dated May 30, 1905.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GATERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Finger-Bars of Mowers or Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has especial reference to devices adapted to be attached to the finger-bars of mowers or harvesters, as set forth in my prior patent, No. 7 00.029, granted to me May 13, 1902; and it consists in certain improvements in such attachments, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 represents my present device, partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse vertical section, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the adjustable guard-point-receiving body, and Fig. 1 is a plan view of the rear casting detached.

As in my said prior patent, in fitting up mower or reaper finger-bars with pea-harvesting attachments it is sometimes found that the knife-guards are longer or shorter than those of the usual or average length; and one object of my present device is to provide certain adjustable means to accommodate this varying length of the said knife-guards, and another object is to afford means for raising or lowering the point of the shoe whenever desired.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates the finger bar, and 2 one of the knife-guards thereto attached by means of a bolt 3 passing through a hole 4 in the rear end of the casting 5 and then through corresponding holes in the knife-guard and fingerbar and secured in place by a suitable nut, as shown. The casting 5 terminates at its forward end in a thin vertical pivoted head 6, which is received within a socket at the rear end of the shoe 7 and pivotally secured therein by a bolt 8. This head 6 has rising therefrom a stud 9 for the reception of the lower end of a coiled spring 10, whose upper end is held within a hollow extension 11 on said shoe, all substantially as in my former patent hereinbefore named, this extension 11 projecting downward from the obliquely-inclined liftingarm 12, which extends rearwardly from the point 13 of the shoe.

As thus far described my present construction does not differ materially from that shown in my said prior patent; but my present means for supporting the pivoted end of the knifeguard and for adjusting the said support are quite different. In the preferred form herein illustrated the casting 5 has an opening 14 therethrough. with serrated side edges 15 15.

16 designates a body with an opening 17 for the reception of the point or front end of the knife-guard 2 and the said body also having a vertical bore therethrough to receive a bolt 19, by which said body and casting are secured together. The shank of this bolt 19 is squared or lozenge-shaped, as shown at 20, next its head for engagement with the described opposed serrated edges 15 of the opening 14;, so that said bolt will be held thereby at any point to which it and the body 16 has been adjusted even though the nut 21 should become somewhat loose in use, and this is a great advantage. Further, if it is desired to change the elevation of the point 13 of the shoe 5 from the position shown in the drawings this is readily accomplished by removing the nut 21, pulling the body 16 off this bolt 19 and reversing said body on said bolt, and putting the point of the knife-guard 2 back in the opening 17, but at a diflerent elevation, and then screwing the nut 21 back tight on said bolt 19.

The operation of the present attachments is in all essential respects the same as in my prior patent hereinbefore named, being designed for use in the harvesting of peas by an ordinary mower or harvester, as well as in the cutting of lodged grain, and hence I do not deem it necessary to illustrate further the machine to the finger-bar of which my attachments are secured.

It will of course be understood that all of the knife-guards may be fitted with the described attachments and that in any event a series of them would be thus provided; also, that the precise shape of any of the parts may be varied within the limits of what is herein claimed in any particular case as desired or required by the construction of the mower or harvester to whose finger-bar and guards my improvements are attached.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings; shoes pivotally attached to the forward ends of said castings, said shoes having pointed front ends, and lifting-arms extending backward therefrom; adjustable and vertically-reversible end-socketed engaging bodies to receive and hold the points or forward ends of said guards and bolts for securing the said bodies in adjusted position.

2. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings having openings therein; adjustable and vertically-reversible end-socketed engaging bodies for the reception of the points or forward ends of said guards, and bolts for uniting the castings and bodies in adjusted position.

3. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings, and a series of adjustable and vertically-reversible end-socketed bodies attached to said castings for the reception of the points or forward ends of said guards.

4:. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings with openings therethrough, adjustableand vertically-reversible end-socketed engaging bodies for the guard-points, and bolts for securing the castings and bodies together, said bolts being adjustably movable in said openings, and adapted to stay in place after adjustment.

5. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings; shoes pivotally attached to the forward ends of said castings and having pointed front ends; and a series of engaging bodies having end sockets at one side of the centers thereof, and adjnstably secured to said castings for the reception of the forward-ends of the guards, said bodies being reversible so as to receive said guard ends at a different elevation, whereby the elevation of the shoepoints may be changed.

6. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings; shoes pivotally attached to the forward ends of said castings, said shoes having pointed front ends, and lifting-arms extending backward therefrom; longitudinally adjustable and reversible blocks, having end sockets at one side of the centers thereof for the reception of the points or forward ends of said guards; and bolts for securing the said blocks in adjusted position.

7. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings, recessed to form troughs with diverging side walls, and having longitudinal openings with serrated opposed edges through their bottom walls; hexagonal longitudinally adjustable and reversible blocks, formed with end sockets at one side of their centers for the reception of the points or forward ends of said guards, and vertical bores beyond the end sockets; and bolts for uniting the castings and blocks, the bolt shanks having squared or lozenge-shaped portions for adjustable engagement with the serrated edges of the trough-openings.

8. In combination with the finger-bar and guards of a mower or harvester, a series of castings, and a series of reversible blocks resting on and attached to said castings, and having end sockets at one side of the centers thereof for the reception of the points or forward ends of said guards.
