HUTCEINSQN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefullmprovenient in Toy Cannons ;v and I do hereby declare -thatthe followl ingis a4 full, clear,'and exact description thereof,rwhich will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the 'same,'refer'ence' being had'to the accompanying drawings,-forming part of' this spccificatiom'in which- The drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved cannon. V i y Thsinvention relates to a new spring-toy cannon, which is `so arranged that it canbe easily set and easily discharged, and consists chiey in arranging the device for retaining thecompressed spring, .upon the body of the cannon, and not at` the-breeoh-cnd of the same, as is now generally done. l

The invention also consists in confining the front portion of the spiral spring in a barrel, so thata pin, which formsV part of the detaining-apparatus, can, by falling in front of the barrel, detain the compressedspring. The bore of the cannon'is enlarged towards the breech, to form a shoulder for the barrel tor strike against, and, to prevent Ythe barrel and spring from dying out.

` The-,invention finally consists in the construction of the detaining-apparatus, whichis simply an oscillatinglever, carrying a vertical pin.` By turning the lever the pin caube drawn out to discharge the cannon, Aand it will at once resetitself by 'its own weight, whenthe lever is released and the spring compressed.

A, in the drawing, represents the barrel of the toy cannon, made of wood or other suitable material. It is hung-upon a suitable carriage, B, as shown, and has a bore, C, which has a narrow front portion, a, and an, enlarged rear chamber, b. Within the chamber b is arranged a spiral spring, D, the front portion of which is heldina sliding barreL'E. i Y p p Y Throughan aperture, o, cut through the body of the lcannon, is fitted a pin, d, which is suspended from an` oscillating-lever, F, asis clearly shown in the drawing. .The spring can be compressed by means of a ram'rod y ormboltinserted in the muzzle, and as soon as the front end ofthe barrel E comes'inrear of the pin d, the latter will drop, and will keepthe spring compressed, Vas in thedrawing, When, then, an arrow or bolt is inserted in' theborc, the arm e of the lever may be drawn back, whereby the spring will be Vreleased and 'the'arm dis- `changed. The frontend of the barrel F strikes :'zgainstthe shoulderf, forming the front of the chamber b, and is thus, with' the spring, arrested.V Thebarrel is so long that when it is in' front, the end ofthe pin d 'will still rest on it,`nnd therefore the barrel can be easily pushed back again, without being hindered by the pin, which V"only`preirents itfrom moving forward, .as above described. i

Having thus ldescribed my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentf l A toy cannon having an enlarged chamber, b, atthe rear end of the bore, and. having'the front end of the spring`conned in a'sliding barrel, E, in combination with vthe lever F and pin d, all made and operating substantially a's Aherein shown and described.
