SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,668, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed November 17, l904=. Serial No. 233,156.
To all whmn it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY J. WILSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at South Canonsburg, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful-Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specias to be utilized as a pipe-wrench.
Briefly described, the invention comprises a body with a jaw projecting therefrom and a handle projecting from the other side of the body, these parts being preferably all made integral. In the jaw carried by the body is provided a toothed gripper or auxiliary jaw normally held within a recess in the jaw when the wrench is being used onnuts and the like and which may be easily projected beyond its recess and held in the projected position, so
as to permit the use of the wrench onpipe. A coacting jaw is provided, and it is preferably formed integral with two plates which work on a chamfered portion of the body and have their one edge provided with teeth to receive a locking-dog mounted in the body and normally projecting to engage with the teeth by spring or other suitable means.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the drawings accompanying this application, wherein like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a preferable embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a like view of the reverse edge. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the movable jaw. Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line :20 mof Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the ratchet-jaw and a portion of the body. Fig. 7 is a detached detail perspective view of the latch carried by the ratchet-jaw and which holds the auxiliary toothed jaw in the retracted or projected position. Fig. 8 is a detached detail perspective view of the lockingdog which holds the movable jaw in the adjusted position.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a body A, preferably made integral with a handle member B, and also carried by the body A is a ratchet-jaw C, which is preferably integral with the body. This jaw 0 projects from the body A at the one side of its forward edge, and a movable jaw D coacts with the jaw (l The jaw D is preferably made integral with two plates E, which Work on chamfered portion F of the body, it being preferable to chamfer the body to such an extent that the combined thickness of plates E and part F is the same as the thickness of the body. Each plate E is provided along its rear edge with teeth G to be engaged by a locking-dog H, mounted in the body, preferably by grooving the body on opposite sides to receive the prongs it, the ends of which take into the teeth G. The body of the locking-dog H is provided with recesses 9, that form finger-grips, so that the locking-dog may be more readily pulled rearwardly against the spring J which is held in the body, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. r
The stationary or rigid jaw C is provided centrally with a slot 0, which extends from the outer end of the jaw inwardly longitudinally of the jaw for the major portion of the length thereof, and in this slot or recess is pivoted an auxiliary jaw K, that is of a width so that when in a retracted position it will lie wholly within the jaw C and when projected to use as a pipe-wrench the teeth Z", will project beyond the working face of the jaw C, as seen in Fig. 1.
On the pivot-pin L, which holds the'auxiliary jaw K in the jaw U, is mounted a spring M, which bears against a pin N, carried by the jaw C, and is engaged against a shoulder m, carried by a latch O, that is inserted through an opening 01', provided therefor in the jaw C, and also engages in a notch 0, provided in the rear end of the auxiliary jaw K. The lips 19 q of the locking-latch rest on the face of the jaw G. 1

K is shown extended so as to permit the wrench to be used on pipe and the like. To extend this jaw, the latch O is removed, the auxiliary jaw K projected outwardly, as shown, and the latch then placed in the opening a in the jaw C in back of the auxiliary jaw K.
To change the wrench from a pipe-wrench to permit its use on nuts or the like, the latch 0 may be removed when spring M is lifted out of engagement with the shoulder on, the auxiliary jaw K forced back into the slot, and the latch then inserted in the opening a and in the notch 0 in the end of the jaw K, and the spring M again engaged with shoulder m.
The jaw D may be moved toward or away from jaw G when dog H is pulled back out of engagement with the teeth G, the spring J forcing prongs 7t into engagement with the teeth G whenever the pull of the dog is re- It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of the invention,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, a body having a handle projecting from one side thereof, and having its other side ehamfered to form a plate, with a jaw projecting from one corner of said plate,
said jaw being slotted longitudinally and trans- Versely, an auxiliary jaw pivoted in said longitudinal slot and adjustable in and out of said slot, a latch removably mounted in the transverse slot of said jaw for locking the auxiliary jaw within the slot, a movable jaw carried by plates slidable on the plate carried by the body, and means carried by the body for securing said movable jaw in the adjusted position.
2. In a wrench, a body portion having a projecting handle, said body portion being chamfered on one side, a jaw projecting from said body portion, a sliding jaw having two parallel plates embracing the ehamfered part of said body portion, each plate being formed with teeth on its rear edge, a locking-dog having prongs which embrace the body portion of the wrench and engage with the teeth on said plates, a spring fixed at one end in the wrench and bearing on said dog.
3. In a wrench the combination of a body portion and a handle, a fixed jaw carried by said body portion, said fixed jaw being formed with a longitudinal slot, an auxiliary toothed jaw pivotally mounted in said slot, a spring mounted on the outside of said fixed jaw, a latch extending through an opening in said fixed jaw, and through an opening in said auxiliary jaw, said spring bearing on said latch to hold the same within the fixed jaw, a sliding jaw mounted in the body portion of the wrench and means to maintain said sliding jaw in adjusted position, substantially as described.
