Be it known that I, JACOB EBEBHARDT, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and improved Hat-Blocking Machine; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description'thereof, whieh.wi1l Aenable others skilled inthe art tomalre and use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. u

Y The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved hat-blocking machine.

This inventionrrelatesto a device for preserving theshape of. the brim of a' hat while the bodl';r is being formed between a metallic and an elastic die; andit consists `in placing an annular elasticA plate around the elastic maledie, and resting upon the frame of the latter, and in placing over `said elastic vplateafn annular metallic plate, whereby, as the female die Vis forced down,to form the hat-body, the rim of the latter will be pressed upon a yield'ingrsurface, and therefore prevented from Vbeing pressed out of shape,- und destroyed, as would be 'the' case if clamped between rigid andunyielding surfaces. i t

` A,Vin the drawing, represents a. rubber or oth-er elastic cone, of suitable form, fitted upon'a suitable stationary or reciprocating frame, B, -as shown.

Cis a cast-iron or other metal die, with an indentation of such 4form as is to be imparted to the hat.

The hat-body is fitted around and upon the cone, and the same is then forced into" the die, or the latter is forced towards andover the die, and the cone will thereby be compressed so as. to fit well into the die, and the hat-body on it will thus alsoreeeive the shape `of the die. I

The brim of t'hehat is formed between-the lower face f the die and a ring, D, which rests upon an elastic ring, E, thati-s supported bythe frame B. i I

By this construction it Awill be perceived'that, as the dies `are brought together, the brim is held upon a yielding surface,'und cannot be pressed out of shape. l

I claim as new, and `desire to secure'by Letters Patentl Y The brim-preserver, consistingVP of theelste annular plate E, between the metallic annular plate D, and frame in combination with the elastic male dieA and met-alliefcmale die C, as herein described, for' the purpose sp'ecied.
