PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT G. FOSTER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING PAINT-PAILSl SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,200, dated May 16, 190.5.
Application filed AugustlO, 1904:. Serial No. 220,189.
To all wh'om, it pulg concern.' l
Beit known that I, ROBERT G. W. FOSTER, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devicesffor Supporting Paint-Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the ligures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention has reference to a device for supporting paint pails upon ladders, scaffolds, etc.
In painting buildings it is the usual practice to suspend the pail containing paint from a ladder by means of a wire bent in the form of a double hook, one of the hooks being adapted to engage the bail-handle of the pail and the other engaging the round of the ladder. Where a paint-pail is suspended in this manner, the bail-handle assumes a position in a vertical plane immediately above the open top of the pail and necessarily presents an obstruction to the passage of the brush into the pail. The operation of dipping the brush is further hampered by the presence immediately above the open top of the pail of theladder-round .from which the .pail is suspended. By the employment of my improved device the paint-pail is rigidly supported in position, the open top of the pail being entirely free from pail supported thereby. Fig. Q is a side elevation of the same, the position of the pail with relation to the device being shown in dotted outline. Fig. Sisaplan viewoi' the bent wire member adapted to embrace the pail.
Referring to the details as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device comprises a screw-clamp 1 Jfor the attachment of the device to a ladder, a downwardly-extending member 2 upon the clamp-jaw, curved or formed to embrace the pail-body and extending approximately half- Way around the same, and an upwardly-extendmeeting each other at 7, being at this point passed through and projecting above parallel perforations 8,(indicated in dotted lines,) provided in the jaw of the screw-clamp, said perforation being preferably spaced apart and the wire ends shouldered, as at 9, after their insertion to prevent their withdrawal.
The manner of. supporting the paint-pail by means of my improved device is shown in Figs. l and 2, the same being firmly'held in place and the usual tendency to swing back and forth being entirely eliminated. It will be observed that the top of the pail is entirely free from obstruction, the handle of the pail being firmly secured in lowered position.
As illustrated the deviceis arranged for use upon ladders, the clamp assuming a horizontal position to permit its attachment to the elongated side pieces of the ladder. Where it is intended to employ the device upon scatlolds, the position of the clamp relative to the member 2 would be altered to cause the clamp to assume a verticalposition to clamp the horizontal pieces of the scaffold.
From the foregoing description the novelty, utility, and many advantages of my device should be apparent.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. In a device for supporting paint-pails, a clamp provided with a-member, curved to conform to the shape of the pail-body, and having means for engaging the pail-handle, substantially as described.
2. In a device for supporting paint-pails, a clamp provided on one of its jaws with a member formed to embrace a pail-body, and having an upwardly-extending projection on said jaw for engaging the pail-handle, substantially as described.
3. In a device for supporting paint-pails, a clamp, and a wire member, secured to the clamp, having a portion thereof formed to elnbrace a pail-body and having the ends thereof extended upwardly above the clamp to provide means for engaging the pail-handle, substantially as described. j
4. In a device for supporting paint-pails, a clamp, and a substantially triangular-shaped wire member having the angular portions thereof bent to embrace the body of a pail and having the ends of the wire forming said member inserted through the clamp-jaw and projecting in parallel relation above the same to provide engaging means for the handle, substantially as described.
5. In a device for supporting paint-pails, a clamp, having a screw-threaded stein operating through one of its jaws, and having a pair of perforations in the other jaw, a wire member having the curved portion 4 to embrace the pail-body, the inclined portions 6 meeting at their upper ends, and the ends thereofl inserted through the perforations in the clampjaw, said ends being provided with a shouldered offset to prevent their withdrawal after insertion, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT G. IV. FOS'IER.
