PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST L. ACKERMANN, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SAND-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,096, dated May 16, 1905,
Application filed March 9, 1905. Serial No. 249,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST L. AGKERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Cans, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for sanding the rails of a railway-track at ferries and other places where it may become necessary to perform this operation for short distances; and the object of the invention is to provide 'an improved device for this purpose which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which the required amount of sand may be deposited directly on the rail or rails when necessary and wherever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa rate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of one of the rails of a railway-track and a sectional view of my improved sanding device or can. and Fig. 2 a cross-section of the rail on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this speci v fication I have shown at a one of the rails of a railway-track, and in the practice of my invention I provide a can 6, having a handle 6 at one side and provided at the opposite side with a discharge-spout 5 which may be of any desired length, and the can b is also provided in the top thereof with an opening 6, through which the can may be filled and around which is a threaded collar or flange 6 whereby a screw-threaded cap 6 may be employed for closing the opening I).
The discharge-spout extends upwardly and is curved outwardly, and secured to the top of the can is an arm d, which in the form of construction shown rests on and may be connected with the spout b at (Z and said arm is curved upwardly from the end of the spout b and is provided in its free end with a grooved wheel 0, which is adapted to travelon the rail a, and the wheel 0 projects slightly from beyond the end of the spout b and in practice the can b is filled with sand and is carried by means of the handle 6 and said can is manipulated so that the wheel 0 will rest on the rail to, and the can is moved forwardly so that the sand which is discharged from the spout b will be deposited on the top surface of the rail to.
My invention is not limited to the method of connecting the wheel a with the can herein shown and described, and this may be done in any desired manner, and in practice the discharge end of the spout b is made large enough to discharge just the amount of sand required for the purpose of sanding a rail.
The can b may be made of any desired form or shape and of any preferred size or dimension, and said can may also be made of any preferred material.
It is frequently necessary to sand railwaytracks at ferries and similar places for short distances, and a number of my improved cans may be provided at such places, and by means thereof the rails of a track may beconveniently and easily sanded whenever necessary. and only the amount of sand necessary will be employed, and there will therefore be no waste of this material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a'can provided at one side with a handle and at the opposite side with a dischargespout, said can being also provided with a guide-wheel which is supported above and slightly in front of the end of the dischargespout, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described means for sanding the rails of a railway-track, comprising a can provided with a discharge-spout, and a guidewheel supported above and slightly in front of the end of the discharge-spout, and adapted to travel on a rail to be sanded, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described means forsanding the rails of a railway-track, comprising a can provided with a discharge-spout, and a guidewheel supported above and slightly in front of the end of the discharge-spout, and adaptence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 8th ed to travel on a rail to be sanded, said can day of March, 1905. being also provided opposite the dischargespout With a handle, substantially as shown AUGUST AGKERll/IANN' 5 and described. 7 Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F. A. STEWART,
my invention I have signed my name, in pres- C. J KLEIN.
