STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIAM VVATTIE, OF IVORCESTFJR, MASSACHUSET'S, ASSIGNOR TO (JROMPTON & KNOWVLES LOOM IVORKS, A CORIORA ION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CRANK- CONNECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,344, dated May 9, 1905. Application filed January 23, 1905. Serial No. 242,283.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VVATTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVorcester. in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oranklonnectors for Looms, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in connectors, and more particularly to improvements in crank-connectors for looms which connect the crank-shaft with the lay.
In the ordinary construction of crank-connectors the connector is of lixed length, and in case of any desired variation in the extreme positions of the lay in its movement there is no provision for adjusting the length of the connector.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved connector the length of which may be adjusted or varied as desired.
My invention consists in certain novel fea tures of construction of my improvements, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a crank-connector embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the connector shown in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow a. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow a, same figure; and Fig. 4
shows the adjusting-screw detached.
In the accompanying drawings the connector 1 is made in two parts 1 and 1. The end of the part 1 is recessed or concaved to receive a crank (not shown) and has secured thereto the strap 2, which in this instance is adjustably secured to the connector by a bolt 3, which extends through a block 4:, located within a recess 5 in the end of the connector (see Fig. 3) and has a nut 3 thereon.
The block 4 within the recess 5 is supported on and held in position by a screw 6, having a screw-threaded inner end 6, which turns in a screw-threaded hole in said block 41, and an enlarged head 6, which extends within an opening 7 through the part 1 of the connector 1 and bears against the end of said opening. By turning the adjustingscrew 6 in or out the block 4 is moved, and with it the strap 2, to increase or diminish the size of the opening formed by the strap 2 and the curved end on the part 1 of the connector 1. After the screw 6 has been turned to adjust the strap 2 as desired a screw 8 is turned in to hold the screw 6 in position.
The part 1 of the connector 1 at its inner end is adjustably attached to the inner end of the part 1 of the connector 1 by two bolts 9, which extend through elongated openings 10 in each of the parts 1 and 1 (see Fig. 1) and have nuts 9 thereon.
The part 1 of the connector 1 has on its outer end a hub 11 with an opening 11' therethrough for pivotal attachment to the lay or other device. The inner end of the part 1 on its inner surface has a half-nut or screwthreaded recess 12 therein (see Fig. 3) to receive and engage the enlarged screw-threaded end 13 on the adjusting-screw 13. The screw-threaded end 13 of the adjusting-screw 13 extends loosely within a plain recess 1st in the inner end of the part 1 of the connector 1. which is directly opposite and contiguous to the screw-threaded recess 12 in the part 1. (See Fig. 3.) The length of the recess 14 corresponds to the length of the threaded end 13 of the adjusting-screw 13. The outer end of the adjusting-screw 13 is preferably provided with a head 13" with a hole 13" therein to receive a pin or other device for turning said adjusting-screw.
In order to adjust or vary the length of the connector 1, the nuts 9 on the bolts 9 are turned off or loosened and the adjusting-screw 13 is turned in one direction or the other, according to whether the connector 1 is to be made shorter or longer. The movement of the threaded end 13' in the threaded recess 12 on the part 1 of the connector 1 will move the parts 1 and 1 of the connector 1 in the direction of their length toward each otheror away from each other, according to the direction of rotation of the adjusting-screw13.
- After the two parts 1 and 1 of the connector lhave been adjusted as desired relative to each other the nuts 9 on the bolts 9 are screwed up to secure the parts 1 and l of the connector 1 together and in their adjusted position.
The advantages of my improvements will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
It will be seen that by simply loosening the nuts 9 on the bolts 9 and turning the adjusting-screw 13 the length of the connector 1 may be varied as desired within certain limits corresponding to the lengthot' the slots or openings in the inner ends of the parts 1 and 1 of the connector 1. 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable connector, comprisingtwo parts, adjustable on each other in the direction of their length, and one part having a screwthreaded recess therein, and the other part having a plain recess therein, said recesses directly opposite and contiguous to each other, an adjusting-screw, having an enlarged screwthreaded end which engages with and turns in said threaded recess, and also turns loosely within the plain recess and is adapted to engage the ends thereof, and means for securing the parts together, substantially as shown and described.
2. An adjustable connector, comprisingtwo parts adjustable on each other in the direction of their length, means for securing said parts together, an adjusting-screw having a thread thereon which engages with and turns in a threaded recess in one of the parts, and also engages with a recess in the other part, anda second adjusting-screw having a thread thereon which engages witha movable block within one end of the connector and said block, and a strap attached thereto, on the end of the connector, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a connector, the combination with the two parts of the connector, adjustable in the direction of their length, and one part having a threaded recess therein, and the other part a recess therein, of a screw having a thread thereon which engages with and turns in said threaded recess, and also engages said other recess to adjust the two parts of the connector, and means for securing said two parts together, and a screw having a thread thereon which engages with a movable block within one end of the connector, and said block, and a strap attached thereto on the end of the connector, substantially as shown and described.
