Description
PATENTED MAY 2, 1905.

CUTTER HEAD APPLIOATION FILED DEG-23. 1904.

UNTTED STATES SYLVANIA.
To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolton Landing, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutter Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements generally in cutter-heads,usually called matcherheads, of that class mounted upon a vertical spindle and carrying upper and lower cutterbits for effecting the tonguing or grooving operation particularly in floor material, as well as in material for ceiling. It has reference more especially to means for effecting the adjustment of the matcher-head to control or regulate the relative cutting action of the matcher-bits, as in performing such tonguing and grooving operation.
Said invention consists in the employment of a washer or disk reversible side for side and adapted in itself to provide for a double adjustment of the cutter or matcher-head, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1 is a broken sectional and partly diagrammatic view showing more in general outline a matcher-head with its bit, its carrying spindle or mandrel, and its spindle-engaging screw and the work or material to be operated upon in juxtaposition therewith as when in initial position or adjustment. Figs. 2 and 3 are like views, being identical or the duplicate of said parts, but with my device or invention applied thereto in reversed positions and vary ing thicknesses of material shown therein, respectively, illustrating the double adjustment of the several parts resulting from the use of said invention.
In the carrying out of my invention I employ a disk-like contrivance or member 1, the same being preferably annular or circular in general outline and having, as will presently appear, the function of a washer somewhat. One side or surface of said washer or disk is plane or unbroken throughout, as at 1. In its opposite side or surface is a preferably Patented May 2, 1905.
PATENT OEETEE.
CUTTER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,978, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed December 23, 1904. Serial No. 238,090.
annular step, recess, or depression 1 produced therein to such a depth as to leave the remaining thus-reduced crosssection 1 of the washer of a prescribed or predetermined thickness. .The major thickness or portion of said washer or disk or the cross-sectional area thereof taken through what may be termed the ring-like or annular marginal portion 1 is also of prescribed or definite requirement previously predetermined. It will be noted that in gaging both cross-sectional areas of the washer or disk a certain standard of measurement is followed as laid down for tonguing and grooving the material from one edge upward in making, for instance, flooring and ceiling, as will be readily appreciated by those conversant with the art. It will be further observed that advancing from what may be termed the initial or primal adjustment for the tonguing and grooving operation, as exemplified by Fig. 1, two other adjustments are obtainable by the employment of my Washer or disk member. As disclosed by Figs. 2 and 8, the relative application of the latter and its reversal of position for that purpose are apparent. The variation of the thickness of the pieces of material shown therein as being operated upon is also obvious, as is the difference in dimensions of said varying pieces from that of the piece shown as being operated upon in Fig. 1, thus providing for three different adjustments of the matcher-head to as many different-sized pieces.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be varied as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. The combination, with a matcher-head cutter, its carrying-spindle and its spindleengaging screw, of a washer member of such construction, whereby, with the presentation of one side or surface thereof to one end of said screw, a different adjustment is obtained from that obtainable by the presentation of the opposite side of said washer member to said screw for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a matcher-head WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, OF BOLTON LANDING, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO SAMUEL J. SHIMER AND SONS, INCORPORATED, OF MILTON, PENN- cutter, its carrying-spindle and its spindleengaging screw, of a washer member having a recess or step in one side and an opposite continuous or plane surface whereby, with the presentation of said, recess and plane surface, respectively, to one end of said screw two different adjustments are obtainable for the purpose described.
3. The combination of a matcher-head cutter, of the character described, its carryingspindle and its spindle-engaging screw, of a disk member or washer, one side or surface of which is plane or unbroken throughout and having in its opposite surface or side an annular step or recess, whereby, with the presentation of said recess and said plane surface, respectively, to one end of said screw two difierent adjustments of said matcher-head cutter are obtained.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS.
