EDWARD (J. LEONARDSON, OF WATERLOO, IVISOON SIN, ASSIGN OR TO DREW ELEVATED CARRIER 00., OF WATERLOO, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISOON SIN.
CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,838, dated May 2. 1905.
' Application filed May 9 1904. Serial No. 207,030.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEDwAan C. LnoNARDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wa terloo, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
i This invention relates to elevated carriers designed to automatically dump their loads at predetermined points in the line of their travel. Its main object is to provide a simple and effective latch and automatic latch tripping mechanism for this purpose.
It consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described, and specified in the claims.
I In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a piece of track and of an elevated carrier to which my improvements are applied, parts being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one end of the dump-box and a section on the line 2 2, Fig. l, of associated parts of the latch and hanger; and Figs. 3 and I are detail views of the latch and associated parts.
The carrier comprises a trolley adapted to run on an elevated wire or track a, a hanger, and a dump-box pivotally connected with the hanger and suspended by it from the trolley, all of the usual or any suitable construction. As shown in the drawings, the trolley consists of two grooved wheels I) b and a sheet-metal frame a, bent to form a housing for the wheels and to support the ends of the wheel-axles. The hanger consists of a horizontal bar (Z, attached to adepending part of the wheel housing or frame below and parallel with the trolley-wheels and the track on which they run, and a bail c, which may be fixed or removably hung upon the bar cl, its depending arms being provided at their lower ends with boxes ff. A dump-box c, constructed of wood or any suitable material, is provided at the ends, preferably below its center of gravity, with trunnions it it, which are fitted in the boxes ff of the hanger.
The dump-box is held in upright or carrying position with its open top uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1, by a latch or look consisting of two membersa longitudinally-movable locking-bar 2' and a keeper The bar vi is arranged in a substantially vertical position parallel with one of the hanger-arms and between it and the adjacent end of the dump-box. It is pivoted at its upper end to a horizontallydisposed lever It, fulcrumed on the bar Li, and is held at its lower end in proper working relation to the other member of the latch by guides Z and m. The keeper j may be made. as shown, in the form of a vertically-grooved boss cast with the sdjacent trunnion-plate, as shown in Fig. 4E, and the guide m may be made, as shown, in the form of a verticallygrooved lug cast with the adjacent trunnionboxf'. The guide Z, which is located above and in line with the guide on, consists of a loop through which the locking-bar passes, formed on a collar which is pinned or otherwise fastened on the adjacent hanger-arm.
A cam n, pivoted to the hanger-bar (Z, bears against one arm of the lever k, supporting the locking-bar i either in looking position, as shown in Fig. 1, or in an elevated position out of engagement with the keeper j. The working face of the cam is preferably formed on one side, as shown, with a flange or lip which projects over the lever is and serves, with the opposing face of the bar cl, to retain it in place. The cam is reversible or of such shape, as shown, that when it is turned in either direction from its central or normal position in which it is shown in Fig. lit will lift the locking-bar out of engagement with the keeper j. It is provided with an upwardly-projecting arm 0, which is olfset laterally at its upper end to insure its engagement with a trip attached to and depending from the track It at the point where it is desired to dump the carrier.
The latch and tripping mechanism operate as follows: The parts of the latch and tripping mechanism being in the positions in when the arm 0 strikes the trip 9 it is turned backward, tilting the lever 713 and withdrawing the locking-bar c' from the keeper 1', as indicated by dotted lines. The box g being thus released, automatically swings into an inverted position and dumps its contents. Upon the return of the carrier to the starting-point, this being usually accomplished automatically by the inclination of the track a, the dump-box is turned back into an upright position and locked in that position by lowering the bar c' into engagement with the keeper the cam 72 being returned to its central or normal position to release the dumpbox when the carrier is again run to the dumping-point. The cam 22 being reversible, as above stated, the carrier may be run in either direction with the same result, the latch being automatically disengaged and the dump-box released when the arm 0 strikes the trip 2, so that, if desired, trips may be provided at distant points and the carrier run from an intermediate point in opposite directions and automatically dumped at either of those distant points, or in case it is reversed in position upon the track the operation of the latch and tripping mechanism will not be aflected.
The device as herein shown and described is of simple construction and is reliable in operation.
Various changes in minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle and intended scope of the invention.
I claim- 1. In an elevated carrier the combination of a trolley adapted to run on an overhead track, a hanger suspended from said trolley, a dumpbox pivotally connected with said hanger, and a latch and latch-tripping mechanism comprising a keeper on the box, a longitudinallymovable locking-bar adapted by engagement with the keeper to hold said box in upright position, a lever adapted to withdraw said bar from engagement with said keeper andacam arranged to act upon said lever and having an arm adapted in its normal position to be engaged by a trip in its line of travel, substantially as described.

4:. In a carrier the combination with a trolley adapted to run on an elevated track and a dump-box pivotally suspended from said trolley, of a latch for holding said box in upright or carrying position, a reversible cam mounted on the carrier and having an arm adapted in its normal position to engage with a trip located in its path and to turn said cam, and disengage the latch in whichever direction the carrier runs, and an operating connection between said cam and latch, substantially as described.
5. In a carrier the combination with a trolley adapted to run on an elevated track, and a dump-box pivotally suspended from said trolley, of a latch for holding said box in upright or carrying position, a lever connected with one member of the latch, and a cam arranged to act upon said lever to disengage the latch and having an arm adapted in its normal position to engage with a trip located in its path, substantially as described.

In witness whereof I hereto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD O. LEONARDSON.
