JOHN LEMMAN, -OFV .OINOINNATL OHIO, ASSIGNOR 'ro J. A. FAY at; oO.,
OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 78,880, dated June 16, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOB. BAND-SAWS.
TO ALL T0 WHOM-THESE LETTERS COME:
Y. Be it known that I, JOHN LEMMA, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inru'ides for Endless or` Band-Saws; and-I do hereby declare `the following to' be a full and exact descriptim oi the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,`
forming a part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is o front elevation of one ,of myimproved guides.
Figure 2 is a. side elevatioirof the same.. l i
Figure 3 is an elevation of the anti-,friction roller b, removed from tho guide, and
Figure 4 is a. partial plan, showing the manner oi' adjusting vthe lateral guides.
Similar letters of reference inthe diierent figures ndi'c'atecorresponding parts.
Inoperating .endless saws, guides `are needed, both above and below thel wood. As is well known, thehigh speed at which these saws 'are driven, and the small amount of surface presented to the guide from the edgeot the sawplate, cau'seixed guides to wear'a'way very fast, even 'if mede of hardened steel or glass, particularly when heavy sawing is done, and the strain of the feed falls on the saw. Rolling-guides, while 4they have partially overcome the dilliculty of friction and weer on the back of the sew, cannot beconstructed to. give a. proper loteral support to the saw, as will hereafter be alluded to.
lThe object of the invention here illustrate is to'ohviatethe'se,severelfdicultiesfand give important advantages in operatingsaws of this kind. t
Its nature consists in a combination of anti-friction rollers and fixed guides, thefirst to support the back or-thin edge of thesaw, and to have lateral-adjustment5 presenting diilereut points to wear; the fixed guides as a. lateral support, and so' constructed os to accommodate saws of different widths, as hereinafter explained. To enobleothers skilled in the art to make. and use my invention, I will proceed to describe ts'mOde of.
construction, andathe manner of operating'th'e same, with the aid of the drawings.
a is a frame or support for thoguides. It'is coredoutto receive the wheelb, with room for lateral adjustment. On the top is a cylindrical extension, k, intended to bellcnnceted to a. bar, on which the whole structure is adjusted up and down, to suit the thickness of the wood being sawed., i
b is an antifriction wheel, of hardened steel or other 'suitable material, mounted on nn'aliis, fassh'ow in iig. 3, and by red lines in fig. 1. Thisaxis has conical bearings formed in the piece g, which allows of compensation for wear; and by loosening the screws s s, the V'wheel b and bearings 'g g can be adjusted laterally, so'
as Lo-bring different points of the periphery of wheel b in contact with the saw.
c c' c are lateral guides, to keep the sew from turning, and in artrue line. These Vguides are so arranged that two or more of thorn can he used, and the others removed or adjusted to receive n. narrow, saw, as shown in iig. 4. The holes through which vthe screws d d pass are slotted, u'srshown by red lines, iig. 1 Eis a. section of n. band-saw suicientlyrwide to allow of all the plates, c c c, being used.- The wlicel b is so arranged as to barely pass through the plate m and come in contact with the saw E. f0il-holes are formed at it', tig-.1, communieatinglwith the bearings o f axis f, as shown in g. 1.
The operation will be readily understood.
Having thus explained the objects and nature of my invention, I do not claim thouse of an anti-friction roller applied to the back of the saw; neitherdo I claim the fixed lateral' guides; -hut What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,` is l l vThe combination of the roller b with fixed lateral guides, c c c, one or more, arranged and opcrating. sub
