SWIVEL FOR JEWELRY-PENDANTS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,422, dated April 25, 1905. Application filed May 17, 1904:. Serial No. 208,329.

Be it known that I, JOHN C. NORDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Swivels for Jewelry- Pendants, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a swivel-joint for jewelry-pendants which can be made by means of dies instead of by hand, as was the practice heretofore, so as to supply them ready for use to the manufacturing jeweler, thereby saving considerable time and labor in applying the swivels to the jewelrypendants; and forthis purpose the invention consists of a swivel for jewelrypendants composed of a stem provided with a terminal eye and one or more annular shoulders adjacent to the eye and of a tubular socket that is fitted on the shoulder or shoulders so that it can turn thereon, the opposite end of the socket being provided with a ring by which the connection with a chain or other suspension device is made.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a jewelrypendant with my improved swivel applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1 drawn on a larger scale and showing one swivel in side elevation and the other in section. Figs. 3 and i are detail side views of the stem of the swivel, shown, respectively, with one and two annular shoulders. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical central section through the tubular socket by which the connection with the stem-bar is made. Fig. 6 is a vertical central section of said tubular section after it has been enlarged at the open end for the reception of the shoulder or shoulders on the stem. Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section through the swivel connection drawn on a larger scale.

Referring tothe drawings, A designates a jewelry-pendant, such as an ornament, locket, medal, or the like. The pendant A is provided with one or two swivels B for suspending the same from a chain placed around the neck or otherwise. Each swivel consists of a stem 0, which is provided with a terminal flattened eye 6, that is pivoted between perforated lugs or ears 6', which are soldered to the jewelry-pendant A, and a tubular socket D, which is drawnby suitable dies, being open at one end and closed at the opposite end, the open end of the tubular socket D being enlarged by a suitable tool and then fitted over an annular shoulder or shoulders d, that are arranged on the stem, asshown clearly in Figs. 2 and 7. The shoulder or shoulders (Z on the stern O are made integral with the shank of the same by means of suitable dies, two shoulders being used when a double connection between the tubular socket and the stem is desired, as in case of very valuable pendants, so as to prevent any possibility of the detaching of the socket from the stem O. For ordinary jewelry-pendants, however, one shoulder on the stem and one rim near the open end of the socket are sufiicient. The rim f is closed around the shoulder or shoulders, as shown in Fig. 7, so that the stem can freely turn in the rim of the socket without being detached therefrom. The ring E, by which the swivel is connected with the chain F, is soldered to the closed end of the socket, the entire swivel device being supplied to thetrade in complete shape, so that the jeweler has only to make the pivot connection between the eye of the stem and the ears on the pendant, when the latter is ready for use.
The swivel can be applied to any article of jewelry which is desired to be worn in suspended condition, such as lockets, medals, ornaments, breastpins, and similar articles.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A swivel for jewelry-pendants, comprising a stem having a terminal eye and an intermediate annular shoulder, and a swivel-socket provided with a ring at the closed end thereof, said socket being engaged by said stem and having an outer rim bent over the shoulder on the same.-
